Postdoctoral Appointee - X-Ray Scattering

Argonne

Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee for the Interfacial Processes Group. The successful candidate will perform research by applying coherent X-ray scattering tools (e.g., Bragg coherent diffraction imaging, surface coherent scattering) to understand reactivity at mineral-water interfaces. The candidate, located in the Interfacial Processes Group (Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division), will also leverage various X-ray scattering tools (e.g., X-ray reflectivity, imaging) as well as in-house capabilities (e.g., scanning probe microscopy, optical holographic imaging, scanning electron microscopy).   The work involves performing experiments, the interpretation of experimental data, and the presentation of results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed literature.

Position Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of x-ray scattering techniques to probe structure and reactivity (e.g., coherent diffraction imaging, X-ray reflectivity, X-ray imaging), ideally through in situ and operando studies

  • Knowledge of interfacial or materials science, and computer programming for data analysis

  • Ability to work interactively, productively, and independently in a multidisciplinary environment

  • Good laboratory skills (sample preparation, analysis)

  • Skills in oral and written communication with a record of publication and external recognition in relevant areas

  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in physics, materials science, chemistry, or geochemistry at the Ph.D. degree level (with a concentration in areas such as X-ray science or interfacial science), with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience

This position may require the ability to travel for work at out-of-state synchrotron facilities when required.
