Quantitative Metabolic Modeling Postdoctoral Fellow

Job Description

Berkeley Lab's Biological Systems and Engineering (BE ) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Quantitative Metabolic Modeling Group (QMM) .

In this role, you will develop computational methods for probabilistic systems modeling of metabolism . You will work to develop High Performance Computing (HPC) methods that can model complex biological systems to enable the production of renewable bioproducts, deepen understanding of human diseases, and model the flow of mass and energy in complex ecosystems and microbial communities. In addition, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team at the intersection of computing and biological science, with access to both powerful supercomputing resources at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC ), and other laboratory facilities.

This position has an anticipated start date of October 1, 2023.

What You Will Do:

  • ??Integrate and analyze data.

  • Develop quantitative predictive models of cell metabolism.

  • Integrate experimental data into quantitative models.

  • Use Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Bayesian Inference approaches to measure and predict metabolic fluxes more precisely.

  • Develop and optimize parallel code and algorithms for predictive models that can run on large parallel supercomputers.

  • Calculate metabolic flux distributions from carbon labeling data and flux balance analysis.

  • Interact continuously with experimentalists to guide and propose new experiments and use available data to its full potential.

  • Provide solutions to problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.

  • Prepare research results for publication and for presentations at scientific and internal meetings.

  • Assist in preparation of grant proposals.

What is Required:

  • A recent Ph.D. (within the last 1-3 years) in Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Applied Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience in Linux including file systems, shell, hardware/software monitoring, etc.

  • Significant experience in Python or other major programming language.

  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and contribute to the planning of a scientific research program.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to organize technical/scientific information, publish in top journals, and present at conferences.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate with a diverse interdisciplinary research team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Microbiology and Microbial Metabolism.

  • Experience in Metabolic Flux Analysis.

Notes:

  • For first consideration, please apply with a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume by July 26, 2023.

  • This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year (benefits eligible), Postdoctoral Fellow appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.

  • The monthly salary range for this position is $7,455 - $8,326 and is expected to start at $7,455 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Emeryville Station East (ESE) — Bldg. 978, located at 5885 Hollis St., 4th floor, Emeryville, CA 94608.
