The Division of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ames National Laboratory is searching for a qualified and strongly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with a diverse team consisting of Staff Scientists, Postdoctoral Researchers, and Students.

The successful candidate will conduct both collaborative and independent research in the area of low-dimensional quantum material synthesis and processing with a particular focus on their characterization by low-temperature scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and other supportive experimental techniques (i.e. surface diffraction and photoemission spectroscopies). The project requires basic knowledge of ultra-high vacuum and cryogenics. The work will include developing, planning and performing low-temperature SPM experiments, critically analyzing results, performing optimization to improve outcomes, and generating reports, presentations and manuscripts for publication.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet set milestones, and draft quarterly progress reports is essential. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with positive attitude are also helpful to provide a professional work environment.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

 Ph.D. degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with scanning probe microscopy-based techniques

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with ultra-high vacuum procedures.

1-2 years’ research experience following PhD.

Demonstrated publication record.
