Job Summary
A postdoc in Bioinformatics position is available in the Underhill Lab at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute. The research laboratory is NIH funded to discover and characterize rare mutational events in humans. Specifically, the lab seeks to develop novel bioinformatic methods to study somatic mosaicism in human tissues and to develop liquid biopsy diagnostic markers for the non-invasive detection of human cancers.
Research activities can focus on any, or multiple, of the following:
  • Develop and validate low input, ultra-deep whole genome sequencing (1,800X) for the detection of rare structural variants
  • Develop and validate reference-free variant identification for the detection of very low-frequency variants
  • Ultra-deep duplex sequencing (>5,000X) for the unbiased discovery of ultralow-frequency single nucleotide variants
  • Analysis of spatial RNA sequencing to discern expression differences between static and invasive tumors

The position includes algorithm development, pipeline development, and data management. Primary duties consist of research-related work in a busy research laboratory that collaborates with physicians and scientists across a range of disciplines. 
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed.
  • Proficient in data handling and have expertise in C/C++, Python, and/or Java for algorithm development.
  • Develop and validate novel bioinformatic algorithms to support lab goals.
  • Prepare, revise, and submit manuscripts for publication and abstracts for presentation at national conferences.
  • Provide support for internal and external grant submissions.
  • May oversee the operations of student course experiments in a research laboratory setting.

  • Problem Solving
    This position assists the PI in planning methods and techniques. Work requires exercising independent judgment and advanced theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. This position may include limited supervision of graduate students and laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent. If incumbent cannot find a resolution, the situation is referred to the supervisor.
    Work is performed in accordance with the supervision of senior laboratory personnel and through periodic conferences with superior.

    Minimum Qualifications
    A PhD degree in Computer Science, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Biology, Biochemistry, or other related scientific discipline or equivalency required. The candidate must be proficient in data handling and have expertise in C/C++, Python, and/or Java for algorithm development.
     
    This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers and  community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. The research lab is in a cancer hospital and spaces/elevators are shared with cancer patients. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
