Research Associate in Chemistry

Job Description

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the laboratory of Prof. Michelle Personick. We are seeking candidates to work on a project funded by the Department of Energy, involving the use of electrochemistry to both synthesize metal nanoparticles and probe nanoparticle growth mechanisms.

The Personick Research Group has developed an integrated electrochemical approach to nanomaterials synthesis that combines real-time electrochemical measurements with electrochemically-driven nanoparticle growth. The funded project applies this approach to the design of syntheses for shaped nanoparticles from non-platinum-group elements—such as copper, iron, nickel, and cobalt—to enable the replacement of platinum group elements with more sustainable alternative materials in energy-relevant catalytic processes.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a PhD in Chemistry or a related field by the start date.  Experience in electrochemistry is required. Preferred qualifications include experience with electrodeposition, electroanalytical chemistry, modeling of electrochemical systems with COMSOL Multiphysics, and nanomaterials synthesis.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UVAJobs and attach a cover letter indicating your research interests in the Personick Lab, a detailed curriculum vitae, and the contact information for three individuals who can provide professional reference letters.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on July 7, 2023, but the position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

This is a one-year appointment; however, the appointment may be renewed for additional one-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.

For questions regarding this position, please contact Michelle Personick, Associate Professor, at equ5hz@virginia.edu

For questions about the application process, please contact Rich Haverstrom, Faculty Search Advisor, at rkh6j@virginia.edu
