The post-doctoral scholar will study how rapidly evolving RNA viruses like influenza and coronavirus spillover, transmit, and evolve at the human-animal interface, using advanced Bayesian phylogenetic approaches. The post-doctoral scholar will be expected to perform a central role in data analysis within an interdisciplinary team of international scientists conducting fieldwork, experimental studies, and statistical analyses. Note that this position is strictly computational (no fieldwork or lab work required). The goal of this long-running project on zoonotic viruses and spillover is to understand how interfaces between humans, wildlife, and livestock promote the evolution of novel pathogens that present threats to humans and identify successful intervention strategies to break transmission in real-world settings.

Essential Functions

  • Study virus evolution using new Bayesian statistical approaches that incorporate various types of metadata (e.g., geographical, demographic) into phylogenetic reconstructions  

  • Use a wide range of other phylogenetic software and other tools for evolutionary and bioinformatic analysis (e.g., selection, reassortment/recombination)

  • Fluency in at least one programming language (e.g., R, Python) for data analysis/visualization and development of high-throughput pipelines for real-time data analyses.

  • Use next-generation sequencing data to study within-host variation and evolution

  • Communicate and work successfully within an international team of scientists working in different fields (virologists, veterinarians, mathematicians, clinicians, etc.).

  • Prepare data for manuscripts, progress reports and grant applications

  • Demonstrate and present research output at international scientific conferences

Non-Essential Functions

  • Communicate with international news media about scientific research and public health

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or other related disciplines

  • Knowledge of evolutionary theory and use of genomic data to infer epidemic patterns (“phylodynamics” or “genomic epidemiology”)

  • Experience using new Bayesian statistical approaches (e.g., BEAST) that integrate metadata (e.g., GPS) into phylogenetic reconstructions

  • Fluency in at least one programming language (e.g., R, Python)

  • Experience using next-generation sequencing to study within-host genetic diversity

  • Experience using the command line to manage, manipulate, and transfer files (for example on high-performance computing clusters)

  • Excellent quantitative, statistical, organizational, and communication skills

  • Able to meet tight deadlines and work collaboratively in a diverse workforce

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of disease ecology and/or mathematical modeling of disease transmission are welcome but not essential.

This is a one-year appointment, with potential for renewal based on funding and performance.
