What Your Job Will Be Like

The Applied Systems Analysis and Research Department (8844) is seeking a dedicated R& D Mathematician to join our multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers who are passionate about their work. You will be developing innovative solutions for probabilistic uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the complex, coupled problems related to deep geologic disposal of nuclear waste. You will use state-of-the-art software tools and high-performance computing to build a sound technical basis for and improve confidence, in multiple disposal options.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Implement and apply uncertainty and sensitivity analysis methods for high-dimensional, highly-coupled, nonlinear systems subject to multiple types of uncertainty;

  • Implement and apply methods for geostatistical analysis, inverse modeling, and parameter estimation;

  • Characterize the uncertainties associated with the coupled processes affecting the performance of deep geologic repository systems;

  • Characterize stochastic, spatially heterogeneous (hydro)geologic features and properties;

  • Develop creative software solutions for uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, run-control, pre- and post-processing, and visualization.

Qualifications We Require

  • Master’s degree in Math, Statistics, Geoscience, or other related degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proven ability to conduct research and development;

  • Expertise in uncertainty and sensitivity analysis;

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in Math, Statistics, Geoscience, or other relevant degree;

  • Experience performing sampling-based uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, including methods such as variance-based decomposition, principal component analysis, and surrogate modeling techniques;

  • Experience using probabilistic and statistical methods to characterize geologic systems and heterogeneous media, such as kriging and Bayesian calibration;

  • Understanding of data analytics and machine learning algorithms;

  • Experience using and developing software and/or scripts for uncertainty and sensitivity analysis in a Linux or Unix environment (e.g., C++, Fortran2003, Python, R, etc.);

  • Demonstrated ability to succeed through teaming with other scientists and engineers;

  • Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form;

  • Ability to work in an environment with changing priorities.

About Our Team

The Applied Systems Analysis and Research Department develops a wide range of software and engineering solutions to ensure the safe deep geologic disposal of commercial spent nuclear fuel and US DOE legacy nuclear wastes. We develop high performance computing, quality-assured software for probabilistic performance assessment of deep geologic disposal systems, including tools for simulation of the coupled processes affecting radionuclide release and transport in the subsurface, sampling-based uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, and automated run-control. We conduct experiments at an underground research laboratory in bedded salt to characterize features and investigate processes affecting repository performance; and partner with adjacent departments and colleagues throughout the national lab complex to integrate mechanistic models of the physical and chemical processes affecting engineered and natural barrier systems into total system performance assessments of generic repositories in a variety of host rock environments.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
