Summary

Dr. Hayek's laboratory in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine is searching for a full time Research Technician, with experience in molecular lab work and animal experimentation. 

We are a highly active lab with numerous high yield projects with high impact publications. Our lab's research activities span the spectrum from bench to bedside, with numerous translational and clinical research projects. Our translational research focuses on understanding the role of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) in kidney and cardiovascular disease. We have an interest in Cardio-Oncology, notably in exploring the role of biomarkers to refine the risk prediction of cardiotoxic effects of chemotherapy. We have lately focused on understanding inflammation in COVID-19 and have created the Michigan Medicine COVID-19 cohort in which we have collected clinical data and measured numerous inflammatory biomarkers.

We are looking for a self-motivated research technician with experience in bench research, especially ELISAs and other immunoassays.  This position will work with COVID-19+ biospecimen. This individual may be involved in multiple overlapping and concurrent projects. Authorship for individual contribution to projects is a possibility if desired.

Responsibilities*

  • Animal husbandry, handling, and experimentation including harvests Immunological assays of human and mouse biospecimen, histological and immunostaining of tissue samples, microscopy and image analysis and other benchwork 
  • Raw data analysis 
  • Training and oversight of UROP students 
  • Administrative duties (inventory, lab organization, lab safety duties, etc)

Required Qualifications*

  • Associate Degree. Experience with standard laboratory procedures.
  • 1-3 years experience.
  • This individual must be self-motivated and perform well under pressure as well as without set deadlines. This individual MUST be meticulously organized and detail-oriented.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelors degree.
  • Previous experience with pipetmen, scales, centrifuges and other common laboratory equipment.
  • Animal handling experience or previous use of experimental mouse models. Mouse husbandry experience, including maintenance of a mouse breeding colony, sexing, tail snips and DNA extraction techniques for genotyping, and tissue harvest.
  • Experience with immunoassays for biomarkers, specifically ELISAs. This position will involve analysis of large human sample sets on multiple analytes.
  • Previous biosafety level 2 experience, including handling and processing human blood and/or urine samples.
  • Previous experience with data collection and analysis software such as Softmax Pro, Excel, GraphPad Prism, and REDCap.
  • Previous experience with cloud-based databases such as Freezerworks and Colony. Previous maintenance of large, sensitive databases including human subjects and sample storage.
  • Manuscript writing experience a plus. 

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
