Position Summary

Fordham University is seeking a staff writer to support undergraduate admission and other enrollment priorities as part of the University’s Marketing and Communications division.

 

The position is based at Fordham’s Manhattan campus but requires frequent inter-campus travel and occasional travel to other nearby locations. Some evening and weekend work is required.

 

Essential Functions         

  • Generates story ideas and writes stories that feature the student experience including academic success, internships, campus life, and New York City for Fordham News, Fordham’s website, email marketing campaigns, social media, and other platforms.
  • Collaborates with division leadership and enrollment staff to produce other timely content in conjunction with marketing/recruitment efforts or as needed to support the work of the division.
  • Ensures that work brings to life Fordham’s mission as a Jesuit university in New York City committed to educating for justice.
  • Interviews students and faculty and attends/covers events on Manhattan and Bronx campuses.
  • Collaborates with social media staff to help produce and disseminate stories on social media channels.
  • Adheres to deadlines and ensures all stories are reported/posted in a timely matter.
  • Maintains accuracy and consistency with Fordham’s editorial style.
  • Serves as a member of the Fordham News team and the University’s crisis communications team.
  • Coordinates coverage with photographers and videographers.

 

Additional Functions

  • Some evening and weekend work is required.

 

Required Qualifications   

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or related field.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in news writing or other types of nonfiction writing.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Advanced editing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Familiarity with content management systems, Photoshop, and video and audio software.
  • Familiarity with issues in higher education.
  • Photography and video skills.

 

Minimum Starting Salary: $60,000

 

Maximum Starting Salary: $65,000

 

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
