Summary

The Nuclear Medicine Advanced Nurse Practitioner exercises autonomy in medical decision making, managing inpatients and outpatients with complex. acute. critical and chrome health conditions undergoing diagnostic imaging and/or treatment in the division of Nuclear Medicine the NP in this role will function highly independently within their delegated assignments as part of a large team and is responsible for synthesizing information and making informed clinical decisions, developing appropriate care plans communicating the plan of care with patients, family members and referring providers.

Responsibilities*

1) Provide Advanced Nursing Practice:

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with complex, acute, critical, and chronic health conditions in the field of Nuclear Medicine therapy.
  • Coordinate diagnostic planning and procedure/therapy preparation for nuclear medicine.
  • Knowledge radiopharmaceuticals and therapeutic agents, ensuring accurate dosages and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Monitor patient responses to treatments and adjust care plans in partnership with nuclear medicine faculty and administration. 
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care outcomes.

2) Autonomy in Medical Decision Making:

  • Exercise independent clinical judgment in determining appropriate diagnostic imaging and treatment modalities.
  • Evaluate and interpret complex diagnostic test results, incorporating them into the patient's overall care plan.
  • Initiate or modify therapeutic interventions based on patient responses and treatment goals.
     

3) Care Planning and Communication:

  • Develop comprehensive and individualized care plans based on patient assessments, diagnostic findings, and treatment goals.
  • Communicate the plan of care effectively with patients, their families, and referring providers, ensuring understanding and collaboration.
  • Educate patients and families on the purpose, benefits, and potential risks of diagnostic imaging and treatment procedures.
  • Provide counseling and support to patients and families, addressing their concerns and facilitating informed decision-making.
     

4) Collaborative Teamwork:

  • Function as an integral member of the Nuclear Medicine team, collaborating with physicians, technologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based protocols and guidelines.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position.

Positions less than 20 hours/week may be combined.

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Michigan. 
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Current specialty certification to practice as Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). 
  • Current DEA license 
  • ACLS/BLS certification required (separate AHA approved BLS certification also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center; ACLS course taken through the UMHS Simulation Center will meet both the ACLS and the BLS requirement).
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner in Nuclear Medicine or a related field.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous adult ambulatory care experience including telephone triage.
  • Previous experience providing care to adult and pediatric nuclear medicine therapy patients and therapy management.
  • Excellent clinical assessment and diagnostic skills specific to Nuclear Medicine.
  • Strong knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals, imaging techniques, and radiation safety protocols.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage a diverse caseload.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of Nuclear Medicine.
  • Previous work performance demonstrating self-direction, autonomy, and flexibility. 
  • Strong leadership skills as evidenced by previous evaluation documentation.
  • Previous work performance demonstrating excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated expert communication skills as evidenced by interviews, references, and performance evaluations.
  • Participation in unit activities that demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with and positively contribute to a team approach to patient care.
  • Demonstrated high standards of personal and professional conduct and attendance as evidenced by interviews, references, and performance evaluations.
  • Advanced computer skills, to include experience with google docs/forms/data analysis, Microsoft Office (word, excel, PowerPoint).
     

Work Schedule

Hours:    40 hours/week 
Shift: Day shift; Monday- Friday Flexibility to meet patient care needs
Location: Michigan Medicine University hospital and any off sites including Brighton Center for Specialty Care

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
