Responsibilities*

  • Responsible for the evaluation and management of children with otolaryngology diagnoses on busy inpatient service
  • Uses physical examination, and diagnostic information to formulate differential diagnoses
  • Collaborates with primary and consulting services
  • Provides comprehensive handoff to team members
  • Provide timely documentation of all patient care encounters.
  • Participate in educational meetings within the program, department, and institution.
  • Establish and maintain a collaborative team approach with all members of the team.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to meet demands of patients and families was well as division and department.
  • Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Perform common otolaryngology procedures such as frenotomy, flexible laryngoscopy, tracheobronchoscopy, and tracheostomy tube changes
  • Admit patients to the service as first contact
  • Work in collaboration with team including physicians and residents
  • Process orders, review lab results and studies, process patient discharges
  • Perform postoperative checks
  • Participate in inpatient consultations 
  • Cross training for tracheostomy team and provide support 
  • Perform H &Ps, obtain surgical consent

Required Qualifications*

NP

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) or American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS certification and PALS
  • 1 year of inpatient experience as an APP (either medical or surgical specialty with adult or pediatric population)
  • 1 year of pediatric experience as an APP (inpatient or outpatient) 
     

PA

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required  
  • Current DEA registration required 
  • AHA approved BLS certification and PALS
  • 1 year of inpatient experience as an APP (either medical or surgical specialty with adult or pediatric population)
  • 1 year of pediatric experience as an APP (inpatient or outpatient)

Desired Qualifications*

  • APP experience with pediatric otolaryngology patient population.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete history and physical examination; order appropriate diagnostic studies; synthesize information and make informed clinical decisions; develop appropriate care plans; respond to patient and family preferences and needs. 
  • Demonstrated high level of critical thinking and medical knowledge by using current medical information and scientific evidence for patient care. 
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and mange a busy work environment. 
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills organization and problem-solving skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize the medical record for accessing information, recording evaluations and progress notes and for ordering appropriate medication and tests.
  • Demonstrated experience with a pediatric surgical patient population within the last four years
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team
  • Excellent procedural skills

Hours/Week: 40 
Shift/Hours/Days: Shift length and hours may vary based on department needs

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
