The Institute serves all 16 statewide campuses in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system and partners with transportation professionals around the globe.

Essential Job Duties
This Instructor and Training Specialist will be responsible for implementing the “E” of ITRE – Education. This position will develop, implement, direct, and instruct online and live courses to expand the training brand of ITRE as it relates to the Fundamental Engineering Principles (FEP), Highway Engineering Concepts (HEC), Fundamental of Engineering (FE) Exam Review, Professional Engineering (PE) Exam Review, and Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) courses. This includes teaching classes not only to NCDOT employees but also to private sector employees on the state and national level, as well as national DOTs.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

- Assist in the design and development of effective in-person and online Moodle-based courses for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam review course, Professional Engineering (PE) exam review course, NCDOT Executive Education courses, and Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) courses. This includes being knowledgeable with technical transportation subject matter and creating content, innovative exercises, assessments, and online communication mechanisms in collaboration with subject matter experts, multimedia specialists, and other instructional professionals.
- Partner with colleagues and stakeholders from NCDOT, state and municipal agencies, and private sector engineering firms in brainstorming, developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative and pedagogically-sound solutions for teaching complex technical concepts in an approachable, engaging manner.
- Build positive, collaborative networks of former and current students and staff members across ITRE to encourage a collaborative and team-oriented approach to problem-solving across all platforms and modes of delivery of ITRE courses.
- Develop and monitor growth of new student populations with marketing strategies through design and development of websites, course advertising flyers, training newsletters, and other marketing channels.
- Provide technical and pedagogical support for existing and upcoming courses; specifically, instructing, grading, creating assessment tools and designing curriculum for the Fundamental Engineering Principles (FEP) program, Highway Engineering Concepts (HEC) course, and LTAP courses.
- Assist in transitioning course materials to other media and learning management systems.
- Contribute to outreach initiatives by providing presentations and workshops and participating in online discussions and conferences.
- Assist with a content update and entire course redesign of the 2024 HEC course, as well as hybrid course technological implementations in the 2023 PE program.

Minimum Education and Experience
Post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus three years of professional training and experience in construction, transportation, or a related engineering discipline.
Other Required Qualifications
- Experience in creating web-based instructional materials, including websites, graphics, and/or other resources
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (including public speaking) in written and spoken English
- Experience in time management, including managing time with good organization skills and requiring minimal supervision while meeting milestones and deliverables; detail-oriented
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and establish collegial relationships with staff and students
- Professional preparation of presentations utilizing good communication and facilitation skills, as well as a wide array of instructional technologies as well as MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and related Google applications
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Training and Education or Civil Engineering plus three years of transportation engineering and/or training and education experience
- Experience in designing instructional activities and assessments for courses in an educational setting
- Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations instructional design
- High level of independence and initiative
- Hands-on experience in the transportation field
- Knowledge of Moodle Learning Management System
- Knowledge of Zoom and Adobe Connect virtual classroom environments
- Proficiency using multimedia hardware, software, and equipment
- Professional Engineering license or the ability to obtain this license
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- North Carolina Driver’s License required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
