Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The position shall be expected to contribute to the design, installation, programming, and testing of new Direct Digital Controls (DDC) and its associated electrical and electronic hardware interlocks and safeties for upgrading existing building HVAC equipment.

The position shall perform service, repair, and operation of a variety of complex commercial/industrial/institutional HVAC control systems.
Duties require the ability to apply highly technical knowledge and procedures to the maintenance of HVAC systems and equipment in the zone. The incumbent will perform & assist in the routine maintenance and planned service of all HVAC controls.

The incumbent shall be expected to perform service, maintenance, and elevated HVAC and automation control work including controller general point validation, sensor calibration, valve and damper actuator confirmation, and control loop tuning.

The position shall require leading less skilled HVAC mechanics and skilled craftspeople.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other science, technical or IT-related field or High School/GED with an equivalent combination of education and/or experience required.

  • Without a bachelor’s degree, a minimum of eight (8) years of experience performing similar duties, including cross-functional experience encompassing CCMS, program controls, chiller plants, applications, and systems support, is required.
OR
  • With a bachelor’s degree, a minimum of four (4) years of experience performing duties as described above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Skilled in reading, interpreting, and analyzing blueprints, drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Ability to utilize a full range of tools, equipment, and procedures to complete commissioning, testing and balancing, and electrical/mechanical diagnostic assessments. 
  • Skill required in the trade’s installation, repair, tools, and equipment. 
  • Must have specific knowledge of the practices and techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems, including DDC controls (Distech, Tridium, and ALC). 
  • A working knowledge of electrical and electronic fundamentals, fluid dynamics (basic), math (basic algebra, number systems (Base 10, binary, hex)), thermodynamics (basic), instrumentation (sensors, transmitters, valves, relays, and electrical motors and actuators), control theory (open and closed loop control), logic and controls programming. 
  • Skill in computer keyboarding and software applications required; including but not limited to skill in using computers to diagnose HVAC system problems, programming computers for HVAC system operations, and for various office applications (e.g. email, MS Word, Excel, Google applications). 
  • Must have the ability to utilize a full range of tools, equipment, and procedures to complete commissioning, testing and balancing, and electrical/mechanical diagnostic assessments.
  • Must have knowledge of management/supervisory practices.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Several years of experience integrating software systems with HVAC systems and controls. 
  • Experience developing and implementing energy management efficiencies. 
  • Experience supervising contractors or staff. Completion of ALC, Tridium AX/N4, and/or Distech gfx certifications.

Additional Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class C driver’s license, or equivalent, with fewer than six (6) pts.

Must have the ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to climb ladders, service lifts, scaffolding and perform assigned duties; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment when required. The incumbent will be required to wear Uniforms and Safety Footwear provided by the University.
