The SCCC Scientist may work under the direction of a principal investigator or program director. The Scientist supports the University’s research goals and objectives by engaging in complex experiments and investigations in a range of areas, depending on specialty and interests. Moreover, an employee in this position contributes to the scientific community and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.

Department Specific Functions

This position will support Dr. Danny Reinberg’s laboratory at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Human Genetics. Dr. Reinberg studies the dynamic processes shaping chromatin structure and channeling transcriptional outcome. Chromatin serves as a carrier of epigenetic information by molding the genome into transcriptionally active or repressed inheritable domains. Dr. Reinberg and his team are focused on investigating the process of chromatin compartmentalization and its role in gene regulation from embryonic stem cells to cells of a defined lineage. In addition, they are gaining a greater understanding of epigenetics in the context of a whole organism through their extensive studies of the eusocial insect, the ant. Organize and attend weekly lab meetings presented by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, either co-supervising with the PI or independently. Evaluate the data presented, offering ideas to advance the project and advice for improving oral presentations for lab meetings and for job seminars. One-on-one meetings with graduate students and postdoctoral members of the laboratory, as needed, and bi-weekly, to discuss data, alternative approaches, and offer ideas to foster the progress of the projects in consultation with the PI.

In addition, this position will be responsible for (Additional Pay role):

(Scientific Writer) The incumbent will collect and analyze complex scientific data and concepts within a variety of fields and translates them through written or oral methods into prose appropriate to the level of understanding of the target audience. This job also assists the Principal Investigator (PI) with the development and/or completion of scientific documents, which include the creation, formatting, proofreading, editing and finalization of scientific documents.

Keeps abreast of scientific literature relevant to the research interests of the PI. Performs rigorous editing and streamlining of manuscripts for publication and similarly, of grant submissions for both graduate/postdoctoral funding and Principal Investigator (PI) funding (NIH, NCI, and HHMI)?such editing entails independent and stringent critiquing of all data and interpretations thereof and rigorous re-writing and streamlining to maintain the integrity of the results being presented or of the proposed studies, respectively,  while matching space constraints and in a timely manner. Writes manuscripts de novo, including Abstract/Introduction/Results/Discussion of others’ data.

Writes pieces involving science-related topics as well as contributing to review articles, in consultation with the PI. Formats substantive copy and scientific editing, proofreading, and finalizing documents as required and requested. Ensures readability, clarity, consistency, and conformance to applicable submissions requirements. Reviews and ensures document language is scientifically/medically correct, responsive to the document requirements, consistent, and justifiable; notifies appropriate PI or leader and suggestion alternative language, as required. Communicates (telephone, email, meetings) with principal investigator and key senior leadership authors as necessary to ensure the accuracy and clarity of documents; meets both internal and sponsor submission deadlines. Edits all extramurally funded proposals for grammar, readability, clarity, consistency, and conformance with all applicable requirements. Works closely with presenters in the development of scientific presentations, ensuring accuracy and adherence to length and time allowed for presentation. Ensures that documents conform with all applicable regulations, current guidelines, and policies; inform appropriate PI or director as required and suggest appropriate correction. Obtains and maintains the documentation for any required copyright transfers, conflict of interest statements, or other publisher-specific requirements. Tracks progress and responds to publication queries, as appropriate.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree in relevant field

Experience:  

Minimum 10 years of relevant experience

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
