Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Office of Letters and Sciences (LTSC) is one of the largest undergraduate advising offices at the university, primarily focused on assisting students in choosing majors and facilitating student preparation for admission to limited enrollment programs.

The Coordinator collaborates with the Business Exploration Series (BES) Coordinator to ensure successful planning and implementation of BES events and first-year experience courses, provide expanded support designed to increase retention and graduation rates of students with an initial interest in business, and presents at recruitment events.

This position provides academic advising to students through drop-in hours, appointments, e-mail, workshops, etc. and teaches a section of UNIV100 and 108 (or other courses) as needed.

All LTSC staff provide support for orientation and recruitment events, serve on designated committees, and support various other initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience:
  • A minimum of two years of professional experience working in a higher education setting is required.
  •  Experience with program or event planning, teaching undergraduates, and with undergraduate advising is required. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to present to groups of students and parents.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with LTSC staff of approximately 30 and with representatives from across campus. 
  • Possess strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills; well-organized, extremely motivated, and self-disciplined; and ability to keep multiple projects and responsibilities current. 
  • Proficiency using, or ability to quickly learn, campus advising technology and Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Master’s degree preferred in higher education/student affairs or a related field. 
  • Experience with University of Maryland academic policies and procedures. 
  • Experience advising students on business majors, careers, and parallel paths.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary position involving extensive use of desktop computers. The position does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and transporting materials and setting up for programs/events.
