Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine (VMPM) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Bacteriology at the assistant or associate professor level. The qualifications, documented experience, and interests of the selected candidate will determine appointment rank.

Responsibilities of this 9-month, tenure-track position include: establishing and maintaining an active, extramurally funded, independent research program focused on bacteriology in an area that strengthens established programs in the department (75%); contribute to the teaching needs of the VMPM department (15%); and perform university service (10%). Areas of research consistent with the mission of VMPM include, but are not limited to: antimicrobial resistance, bacterial infectious diseases of animals and humans, molecular pathogenesis of bacterial pathogens, vaccinology, genomics, proteomics, and host/pathogen interactions. Teaching responsibilities may lie within the undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional veterinary curriculum.

The successful candidate will have a unique focus matching with the department’s mission in current research interests as stated above. Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D or an equivalent degree in microbiology, infectious diseases, or a related discipline

  • Record of publication in peer-reviewed journals



Preferred Qualifications:
  • DVM, MD, or an equivalent degree

  • Demonstrated research experience in an area of antimicrobial resistance, bacteriology, or bacterial pathogenesis

  • Documented teaching experience

  • Documented evidence of grantsmanship or extramural funding

  • Documented evidence of research mentoring experience

  • Documented evidence of collaborative research experience



Department/Program & College Description:

The VMPM department has a three-tiered mission of research, teaching, and service, and is addressed by a highly-productive faculty and staff, energetic graduate students and postdoctoral research associates, and adjunct faculty with additional expertise. Our research aims to improve animal health, public health and food safety. Our faculty have instructional responsibilities for bacteriology, immunology, virology, microbiology, epidemiology, and public health.  VMPM fosters an environment that promotes excellence in research, teaching, and service through innovation and discovery.  The department imparts knowledge and skills in infectious diseases, encourages lifelong learning, conducts basic and applied research focused on animal and human health, participates in professional and community service, and partners with stakeholders to address societal needs.
