The Alcohol & Other Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) is designed to provide early identification and interventions for students who use alcohol or other drugs. Early recognition of substance misuse or dependence provides an individual with a greater chance for positive change.
Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Substance Abuse Specialist. Reporting to the Director of the ADAP Program.
The Substance Abuse Specialist provides:
  • Multi-disciplinary mental health service offering preventive education, clinical assessment/evaluation, training and consultation:
  • Intervention, treatment, recovery support, case management and referral, and collaboration with other professionals
  • Campus constituents to address substance use related concerns with the Rutgers University-Newark student population.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or other relevant field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of alcohol dependency theories and therapeutic treatment modalities.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with insight therapy, behavior modification, supportive educational therapy, and motivational interviewing, individual and group counseling techniques for patients with chemical dependency issues; workshop presentation; research design implementation; data analysis; and report writing. Also requires good communication skills and computer literacy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2-5 years experience providing treatment for alcohol and other drug problems.
  •  Expected to make complex clinical decisions and to intervene in potentially life threatening clinical situations. Clinical decisions must be presented to the Director of ADAP or Director of the Counseling Center prior to a clinical decision.
  • Familiarity with recovery from alcohol/drug addiction. An in-depth knowledge of substance use disorders and recovery is essential to this position.
  • Experience and enthusiasm about working with diverse populations. The department and program are committed to removing barriers to care for underserved populations.
  • Experience with severe and complex psychopathology is strongly preferred. Experience, familiarity with University mental health multi-disciplinary work is preferred.

Immunization Requirements


Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same.
