Basic Function

Under the direction of the Dean, Arts and Cultural Programs, perform a variety of specialized and technical duties in the operation of a college theatre; design scenery, lighting and sound for theatre productions; oversee and participate in the construction of sets and rigging; train and provide work direction and guidance to students as assigned.

Representative Duties

a) Perform a variety of specialized and technical duties in the operations, use and maintenance of college theatre facilities and equipment. E

b) Design theatre scenery, lighting and sound for various productions as assigned. E

c) Train and provide work direction to students in proper methods of scenery construction, scene painting and rigging; train and oversee students and staff in the safe and proper operation of tools and equipment used in the preparation and operations of theatre productions. E

d) Construct sets and perform mastery rigging, carpentry and property master duties as required. E

e) Maintain theatre facilities and work areas including theatre stage, scenery shop, storage areas and control booths in a clean, safe and orderly condition; report unsafe conditions or repair needs to supervisor. E

f) Provide technical direction to student crews during production rehearsals and performances; provide work direction and guidance to work study students as assigned. E

g) Operate a variety of equipment and machines such as theatre lighting and sound equipment, saws, drill presses, welders, sanders, drills and other hand and power tools; maintain equipment and machines in proper working condition. E

h) Maintain inventory of equipment, materials and supplies; order or purchase equipment, materials and supplies as needed; coordinate with other schools and colleges to obtain equipment and supplies needed for productions. E

i) Communicate with administrators, faculty, performers and others in coordinating theatrical productions; attend various meetings as required. E

j) Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by two years college-level course work in theatre arts and two years experience in stagecraft and stage operation including rigging, lighting and set construction.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

Valid and insurable California driver’s license.

Working Conditions

College theatre environment; subject to heavy lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing and climbing.

Position Description
