The Executive Director/CEO is a full time, exempt position employed by the Youth Marine Foundation (YMF), a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

The Executive Director/CEO (ED) of Tacoma Youth Marine Foundation (YMF) plays a vital role in fostering leadership skills, promoting character development, and creating pathways for success among young people in the maritime industry. This position is a great fit for an energetic leader that has a successful track record of mentoring and inspiring their staff and enjoys mentoring youth ages 13 and up.

Job Summary
The ED’s primary responsibility will be to oversee the successful operations and financial health of the Youth Marine Foundation and its subsidiaries: Commencement Bay Marine Services, Inc. and Tacoma Fuel Dock.

This role works closely with the Board President on a daily basis and is expected to provide strategic leadership for the organization. Must have a combination of strong private sector business acumen combined with nonprofit experience, either as a Boardmember or Executive Director.

Responsibilities

  • Continue to grow and maintain an existing high-quality, and lasting programming strategy through programs, and services at the Tacoma Youth Marine Center, a premier two-acre waterfront campus that includes classrooms, docks and a repair facility.
  • Work with the internal team and YMF supporters to expand the role of the Foundation in the community and provide increasingly inclusive programs for youth ages 13 and up.
  • Supervise and develop the leadership team of Youth Marine Foundation, Commencement Bay Marine Services, Inc., Tacoma Fuel Dock, and MV Doolin-Rogers, ensuring their projects are supported and goals are achieved.
  • Manage budgets of $2 million or more, ensuring effective financial stewardship and strong financial results.
  • Oversee the start-up and programmatic partnerships of the new world-class training vessel, MV Doolin-Rogers, including financial modeling.
  • Hire and supervise key staff members, including professional US Coast Guard licensed crew for MV Doolin-Rogers and an Adjunct Vessel Operations Instructor for high school students.
  • Negotiate school and program contracts with community program partners for the upcoming program year (beginning September 2023).
  • Fulfill existing charters aboard MV Doolin-Rogers and create new operation budgets for the vessel.
  • Realize funding from capital campaigns and government funders.

Qualifications

  • Strong business acumen and the ability to deliver strong financial results for the Foundation and its business enterprises.
  • Entrepreneurial and strategic mindset with experience managing budgets of $2 million or more.
  • Experience with developing relationships with key community leaders.
  • Patience, experience and enjoyment of working with and mentoring teenagers.
  • Local South Sound connections and familiarity with the regional landscape preferred, but not required.
  • Able to collaborate with and mentor adult volunteer leaders

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Must attend Youth Protection Training annually

Immediate Priorities

  • Hire a vessel First Mate, Adjunct Instructor, and Marine Mechanic.
  • Negotiate and draft school and program contracts with program partners for the upcoming program year.
  • Complete existing charters aboard MV Doolin-Rogers and create new operation budget.
  • Realize funding from capital campaigns with government funders.

Salary and Benefits

  • Paid holidays, two weeks paid vacation and paid time off.
  • Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance after completion of first 60 days.
  • Annual salary range for this position is $80,000 - $100,000 depending on candidate experience and qualifications.
