Radar Modeling and Simulation Analyst

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you interested in creating innovative solutions to challenging problems?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) a national leader in scientific research and development, is seeking an Associate Radar Analyst to join a team that is creating innovative solutions to challenges facing the development of missile defense radar systems.

Our Mission is to evolve radar concepts and algorithms to support our Nation's warfighters. Through modeling, simulation and advanced analysis techniques, we strive for the highest level of insight possible on radar system capabilities, limitations and opportunities. Our solutions are grounded in a deep understanding of the problem space including radar phenomenology, state-of-the- art technologies and the associated uncertainties.

As a Radar Modeling and Simulation Analyst you will …

  • Have the opportunity to support the development of high fidelity simulation of AN/ SPY-1 ballistic missile defense radar (BMD), and possibly other US Navy and Missile Defense Agency BMD Capable radars as follow- on work. Verify and validate these simulations to ensure their accuracy in predicting radar performance.
  • Perform verification and validation of high fidelity radar simulation by various means.
  • Conduct post-test analysis of recorded radar data to assess fulfillment of mission objectives. Validate pre-test simulation predictions with observed radar performance. Update models and simulations to accurately reflect actual radar system behavior as required.
  • Develop an understanding of intended radar design, simulation code, and/or tactical code to determine correct radar behavior.
  • Debug/troubleshoot APL code to determine correctness relative to either intended radar design or radar specifications.
  • Communicate with prime contractor to clarify radar design intent and details.
  • Develop MATLAB or Python scripts to simulate functions as needed to support analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Explore ways to enhance and improve the verification and validation process to facilitate efficient detection and resolution of issues.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Math, Physics, or equivalent relevant degree.
  • 1 years of experience in engineering, analysis, modeling and simulation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong desire to make a difference.
  • Are willing and able to participate in some limited travel to Contractor and customer sites.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • Master' s degree in Electrical Engineering, Math, Physics or equivalent with three years of experience in radar development and/or defense systems simulations.
  • Familiarity with missile defense radar analysis, systems, and models.
  • Demonstrated capability in validation or verification of complex software.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python and Java.
