In this role, you will be responsible for the development of new radiation detection materials and their characterization with the focus on scintillators utilizing state-of-the art instrumentation as well as modeling and simulations for applications in basic physics experiments, radiological safety, nuclear security, proliferation detection, nuclear process monitoring, and medical imaging. This work will be embedded in ongoing efforts in the Applied Nuclear Physics Program within the Nuclear Science Division.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct original research in basic and applied research areas. Support ongoing efforts in the development and demonstration of new and improved radiation detection concepts in basic research experiments and national security.
  • Lead day-to-day research activities associated with ongoing projects related to the development of scintillator detectors.
  • Develop and implement novel characterization methodologies for excitation and de-excitation processes in radiation detection materials.
  • Support the development of new models in the energy-loss and related excitation and energy transfer, and de-excitation processes in radiation detection materials with the focus on scintillators.
  • Provide mathematical analysis and provide creative thinking.
  • Plan and execute experimental measurements.
  • Interact with a diverse range of people including professional colleagues outside LBNL.
  • May supervise technical support staff.
  • Contribute to the development of new principles and concepts.
