Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Climate & Ecosystems Division has an opening for a Biogeochemistry Scientific Engineering Associate to join the team in the Terrestrial Biogeochemistry group with Margaret Torn.

Are you passionate about conducting research on ecosystem carbon, nitrogen, and water cycling with an emphasis on soils and trace gas flux? Do you have experience with field instrumentation and sensors, as well as managing data sets and performing quality control? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you!

What You Will Do:

  • Set up instrument systems in the laboratory and field.

  • Maintain and develop field experiments, including instrumentation maintenance, monitoring and calibration, and QC of continuously logged soil microclimate.

  • Install, implement, and troubleshoot data acquisition systems, including wiring and coding.

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute fieldwork campaigns.

  • Characterize and sample soils in the field (i.e., from soil pits and soil cores).

  • Work with a partner SRA to support lab tasks, including maintaining a clean and safe lab.

  • Develop methods for, plan, coordinate, and conduct field work to sample soil and vegetation.

  • Write and maintain field sampling and laboratory protocols that ensure data quality in replicated measurements.

  • Provide consistent fieldwork support, such as ordering and maintaining field supplies and tools.

  • Design and implement data organization systems for field and laboratory data sets.

  • Interact effectively with EHS & Facilities personnel and field station staff.

  • Travel to field sites for maintenance, sampling, and training team members.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's or Masters and/or related experience with two to five years experience with increasing responsibility, or PhDand/or related experience, in soil science, biogeochemistry, ecosystem ecology, environmental engineering, or related field.

  • Soil science background, ability to describe soil horizons.

  • Fieldwork experience for soil biogeochemistry, including soil sampling.

  • Experience with field instrumentation and sensors, such as soil respiration measurements or microclimate monitoring.

  • Ability to manage data sets and perform quality control for outliers and instrument problems.

  • Committed to safe and inclusive working conditions, in the field and lab.

  • Can communicate effectively with multiple members of project team and multiple project investigators.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is expected to pay $6,561.00 - $8,205.00/month, which fits within the full salary range of $6,561.00 - $11,076.00 for the Scientific Engineering Associate. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
