Applied Physicist Staff Scientist

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for an Applied Physicist Staff Scientist to join the team.
This position will take on a leadership role in developing technologies and methods for radiation detection and imaging in the Nuclear Science Division focusing on biomedical imaging. The selected individual is expected to establish and lead programs in developing and implementing radiation imaging systems, data processing, and image reconstruction algorithms relevant to the development and utilization of radio-pharmaceutical therapy. Work will be embedded in ongoing efforts at the Applied Nuclear Physics program and Nuclear Science Division at LBNL in close association with projects in the Nuclear Engineering Department at UC Berkeley.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Establish and lead new biomedical imaging programs.
  • Conceptualize, conduct, coordinate, and make significant contributions to the development and realization of advanced concepts in radiation imaging to enable the utilization of therapies associated with high biological effectiveness.
  • Contribute to other Applied Nuclear Physics Program activities and new division and lab-wide initiatives e.g., by supporting ongoing efforts in developing and demonstrating new and improved radiation imaging concepts in medicine, astrophysics, proliferation detection, nuclear safeguards, and emergency response. 
  • Interact with a diverse range of scientists interested in the science, techniques, and opportunities arising from the work.
  • Present research and publish papers, reports, and may act as Principal Investigator on new proposals and projects.
  • Directly supervise other professionals, technical support staff, postdoctoral researchers and/or students. 

 

What is Required:

  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience beyond the customary highest degree appropriate to the candidate’s discipline in Nuclear Science and radiation imaging or related field.
  • Relevant professional experience in biomedical imaging, nuclear instrumentation, radiation detection, nuclear engineering, experimental nuclear or particle physics. 
  • Published record of excellence and strong  research accomplishments in Nuclear Science, radiation imaging, or related research.
  • Demonstrated expertise in radiation imaging techniques.
  • Demonstrated expertise in modern radiation detection techniques and basic nuclear physics concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and advanced scientific principles.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience within a research environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to write proposals, obtain funding, and to perform corresponding independent research. 
  • Effective communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse and multidisciplinary team.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in modeling and simulations.
  • Expertise in algorithm development.
  • Experience with modern machine learning methods.

 

Salary:

This position is expected to pay a targeted range of $10,084 to $18,824 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
