Job Description


The Neutron and X-ray Scattering Group of the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for an Assistant Physicist in the area of experimental condensed matter research using advanced neutron scattering techniques.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and utilize novel neutron scattering approaches to investigate the emergent properties of energy and quantum materials. The group’s current focus is on developing scattering methods to study the impact of local defects and short-range correlations on materials properties in single crystals of ionic conductors, quantum materials, and frustrated spin glasses.

Position Requirements

  • Strong expertise in advanced neutron scattering techniques.
  • Strong background in experimental condensed matter physics
  • Work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Strongly Preferred:

  • Experience in analyzing and modelling large data sets.
  • Experience with single crystal diffuse scattering
  • Experience in modeling local structure
  • PhD in a relevant subject area and some postdoctoral experience

The position will remain opened until filled; starting date is flexible, with a target of late Fall 2023
