Purpose

The University of Texas McCombs School of Business invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in statistics and data science to join the Salem Center for Policy, whose core mission is to leverage leading research methodologies in data science to assess and inform policies impacting business and the economy. The post-doc will work on several key data analysis related research initiatives, where they will contribute to various research projects. The post-doc will utilize their background in statistics to assist and these projects and pursue their own research agenda.


Responsibilities

  • The fellow will be a key member of the Salem Center’s research group. The fellow will work specifically in Bayesian Causal Inference, non-parametric function estimation or production level R coding
  • The fellow will work under the supervision of Carlos Carvalho. It is expected that the fellow will be an active participant in shaping Salem Center’s research agenda through activities such as planning seminars, conferences, and workshops.
  • While the position is housed in the McCombs School of Business, the research initiative will actively seek to engage with other units on campus, including the Departments of Economics, Government, as well as the School of Public Policy. The fellow is encouraged to pursue interdisciplinary collaborations and build their research portfolio.
  • Other related functions as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Applicants should have earned a PhD within the last three years in Statistics, data science or a related field. Experience with empirical analysis and techniques, data collection and management. Ability to write independent research. Strong written and oral communication skills. Expertise in Bayesian Causal Inference, non-parametric function estimation and production level R coding.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience researching causal inference, with the creation of R-packages. Experience with using Python scrapers to collect metadata and harvest public records from web sites. Experience with research on political economy and public policy related topics.


Salary Range

$90,000


Working Conditions

  • This is a 12-month position with the possibility of renewal for a second year. End Date will be established based on selected candidate's start date.

  • This position is Austin, TX-based and is eligible for telework and flexible scheduling.

  • Standard office conditions and repetitive use of a keyboard

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
