About Career Services:

In Career Services, our mission is to bridge the gap between learning & doing by empowering students & alumni through providing accessible resources, intentionally strengthening partnerships, and fostering students’ career readiness skills for meaningful career paths. Career Peer Mentors will aid in this mission by supporting the career development of fellow students through peer education and mentoring.

Job Summary:

A Career Mentor (hopefully you) provides one-on-one and group coaching and support on a variety of career-related topics including resume and cover letter reviews, job searches, mock interviewing, and other resources in our Career Studio. A Career Mentor will also promote Career Services by being an active contributor to events, marketing, workshops, and projects.

Career Mentors also provide excellent front-desk customer service at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus Career Services office over the telephone, e-mail, and in-person to students, staff, faculty, or employers. Career Mentors also assist students with logging into Handshake (our Career-related online platform), scheduling or checking into appointments, and answering front-line questions about services available in Career Services along with directing students to appropriate departments in the college.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Responsibilities and Skills- Do you have what we are looking for?

  • Meet with students in our Career Studio 1:1 or in a group setting to provide guidance on resumes, cover letters, job search and tips, mock interviews, and general resources
  • Greet people as they come into the office, on the phone, or in an email with a positive friendly tone, answer questions, provide information, and perform front desk responsibilities
  • Work on assigned projects such as case management, marketing, tabling, presentations, etc.
  • Willing to provide input, and creative ideas along with problem-solving in the development of Career Services processes, projects, and events to support students
  • An understanding/willingness to learn about inclusivity and diversity and work with a diverse population
  • Demonstrated professional behaviors through being organized, managing time, completing training and tasks, and being willing to ask questions to learn and grow
  • Exhibit interpersonal communication, and human relations such as being patient, friendly, and a team player along with verbal and written communication
  • Creative, innovative, motivational, and collaborative, and willing to improve yourself and others
  • Safeguard highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint and willing to learn additional software

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Salt Lake Community College student.
  • 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher during time of application.
  • Enrolled in at least 9 academic credit hours during the Fall and Spring semesters and 6 credits for the summer semester
  • Ability to work 15-20 hours a week

  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Special Instructions

Training: Don’t stress about needing to know everything beforehand! We will provide robust paid training the week before the start of school in August. Ongoing training and professional development will be also provided.

Schedule: Flexible Schedule; hours will vary based on our needs and your class schedule. Typical hours will be M-F 8-4:30. 15-20 hours a week will be required. This position contract runs through the Academic Year, from August 2023 through May 2024, with the possibility of working over the summer and/or school breaks.
