Virome Discovery Postdoctoral Fellow

Job Description

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Joint Genome Institute (JGI ) has an opening for a Virome Discovery Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Microbiome Data Science Group.

In this exciting role, you will perform viral genomics research, with a strong emphasis on systems level characterization, analysis, and understanding of DNA/RNA virome from metagenomic and metatranscriptomics data. The JGI has been instrumental in driving the characterization of Earth’s virome towards a better understanding of its role in regulating microbial communities. You will participate in ongoing efforts to discover and characterize novel viruses from a diverse array of biomes, including soil and human samples. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic multidisciplinary team of biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists and software developers.

The JGI ’s mission is to provide the global research community with access to the most advanced integrative genome science capabilities in support of the DOEs research mission to solve the world’s evolving energy and environmental challenges. The JGI supports projects in genome sequencing, synthesis, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and natural products in plants, fungi, algae, and microorganisms. This position is headquartered on the Lab’s main site at the Integrative Genomics Building (IGB) (Virtual Tour ).

What You Will Do:

  • Perform large scale analysis of viral genome sequence data, analyze metagenomics and metatranscriptomics sequences, and perform comparative analyses.
  • Contribute to research in the Viral Dark Matter project as part of a large multidisciplinary team.
  • Utilize scripting language(s) and apply standard bioinformatics tools and pipelines for the analysis of genomic and metagenomic data.
  • Work in a high-performance computing environment and interact with a team of computer scientists, software developers and postdoctoral researchers to develop new methods and tools for large-scale metagenome data analysis.
  • Perform comparative analysis across hundreds of metagenomic/metatranscriptomic data and billions of genes.
  • Develop statistical methods to compare different samples/communities.
  • Apply standard bioinformatics tools for the analysis of genomic/metagenomic data.
  • Design and implement new approaches for DNA/RNA virome analysis.
  • Publish in peer review journals and deliver scientific presentations at scientific meetings.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. (within the last 1-3 years) in Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Virology, or a related discipline with training/experience in Bioinformatics.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microbial/Viral Genomes and Metagenomes including analysis and recent or pending publications.
  • Demonstrated experience with R statistical analysis platform, programming in Python, Bash scripting, and UNIX utilities and filesystems.
  • Experience using standard Bioinformatics tools and databases.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to organize/present technical reports and provide a proven track record of recent or pending scientific publications.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience collaborating with a diverse interdisciplinary research team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Machine Learning.
  • Knowledge of Biology/Biochemistry including complex biological concepts (genes, pathways, microbial phylogeny).
  • Knowledge of Metatranscriptomics.
  • Familiarity with command line sequence analysis tools (e.g., Last, Hmmer, Megahit, MetaSpades, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix.

Notes:

  • For full consideration, please apply with a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume by May 31, 2023.
  • This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year (benefits eligible), Postdoctoral Fellow appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000 - $5,995 and is expected to start at $5,011 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
