Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes

Job Title: Post-Doctoral Fellow

Position #:00809210 – Requisition #:29924

Job Summary:

The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) is a multi-disciplinary diabetes center located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado.  The BDC is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  This is a full-time Post-Doctoral fellowship within the Laboratory of Dr. Aaron Michels.  The duties include performing ‘wet’ laboratory techniques, data analysis, and manuscript/grant writing. The Michels’ Laboratory (www.michelslab.com) studies the immune mediated mechanisms of type 1 diabetes (childhood onset diabetes) and has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than a decade. This position will be involved with research into the immunology of antigen presentation to self-reactive T cells along with the causes and treatment of autoimmune diabetes. Additionally, projects will be investigate protective and disease susceptible HLA molecules in type 1 diabetes and the T cell receptor repertoires that recognize these immune complexes, particularly in human subjects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform molecular techniques with DNA including genotyping, PCR, and next generation sequencing techniques to analyze T cell receptors and statistical analyses (Microsoft Excel/PRISM/R) with this generated data.
  • Conduct experiments with peripheral blood immune cells utilizing multi-color flow cytometry, cytokine ELISPOT assays, and ELISA techniques.
  • Develop/lead hypothesis driven research independently.
  • Aid in and independently write manuscripts/grants.
  • Assist with training of junior or new employees/students and with day-to-day lab duties.

Why Join Us:

Dr. Michels’ laboratory performs cutting edge immunology research into the pathogenesis, prediction, and prevention of type 1 diabetes.  The lab performs both basic and translational immunology research making use of mouse models and a wealth of well-characterized human samples. His lab discovered that small ‘drug-like’ molecules targeted to major histocompatibility (MHC) class II antigen presentation can block T cell responses and they have translated this therapeutic approach from bench to bedside. Studies are ongoing to understanding the mechanism by which dominant protection is afforded from diabetes resistant MHC class II molecules in animal models and humans to develop novel therapies to treat the underlying autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes.
