The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking applicants for full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty positions to work as research instructor-research assistant professor (open rank).

Posting Description

The Candidate will be working as an AI / clinical expert in our growing Division of Artificial Medical Intelligence in Ophthalmology at The University of Colorado (CU) School of Medicine. The position will provide ML/clinical expertise on the development of artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms to integrate multiple sources of patient-derived data, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), retinal fundus photography (RFP), electronic medical records, genomic sequencing, and laboratory tests, to improve clinical decision-making. The position will also entail publication of research findings in top venues within the field as well as leading inter-disciplinary teams (including clinical ophthalmology, computer/imaging scientists, programmers, and biomedical engineers) to integrate developed algorithms into software for the larger research community as well as into the clinical workflow for prospective validation. Other responsibilities include ensuring research project deliverables are completed in a timely manner, supervising students and interns as well as helping out with management of regulatory activities associated with research studies, IRB submissions and renewals and assembling grant applications.

The position will report directly to Jayashree Kalpathy-Cramer, PhD, department of ophthalmology.

The position will supervise as well as provide training and mentoring to postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students, and high school students.

Examples of Work Performed

Instructor

  • Provide AI / clinical expertise in the applications of ML approaches to analyze multiple sources of patient-derived data, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), retinal fundus photography (RFP), electronic medical records, genomic sequencing, and laboratory tests.
  • Teaching basics of clinical ophthalmology, artificial intelligence, image processing, and algorithmic validation to AI faculty/clinical faculty/fellows/residents/medical students within the department.
  • Participating in inter-disciplinary teams (including clinical ophthalmology, computer/imaging scientists, programmers, and biomedical engineers) to integrate developed algorithms into software for the larger research community as well as into the clinical workflow for prospective validation.
  • Supporting publications of research findings in top venues within the field.
  • Monitor project progress on github, including testing its reproducibility + maintain documentation of project datasets and codebase and check if they are compliant with best data organization practices outlined by the team.
  • May assist in the role of scrum master, onboarding new employees as well as in organizing lab meetings, outdoor activities and scheduling interviews/meetings of faculty.

Assistant Professor

  • Training and mentoring to postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students, and high school students, with special emphasis on mentorship of backgrounds underrepresented in medicine/research.
  • Leading inter-disciplinary teams (including clinical ophthalmology, computer/imaging scientists, programmers, and biomedical engineers) to integrate developed algorithms into software for the larger research community as well as into the clinical workflow for prospective validation.
  • Leading in inter-disciplinary teams (including clinical ophthalmology, computer/imaging scientists, programmers, and biomedical engineers) to integrate developed algorithms into software for the larger research community as well as into the clinical workflow for prospective validation.
  • Leading publications of research findings in top venues within the field.
  • Develop outlines for project goals, participate in project development/planning including including project budget development processes,  as well as manage and coordinate project deliverables from conception through completion.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Attends meetings and scientific conferences, as needed. Maintains communication platforms including newsletters, emails, and lab websites/social media.
  • Assists with data collection, data analysis, and reporting of preliminary findings, as needed.
  • Assists with preparation of grant applications and manuscripts, including data analyses, literature searches, drafting of text, confirming affiliations and linking of funding to accepted manuscripts.
  • Assists with Material Transfer Agreements, Data Use Agreements and Research Collaboration agreements.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Instructor:

Qualified candidates must have a master’s degree or its equivalent. 

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree (PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science or related field such as Mathematics, Engineering or Physics. 
  • Research Instructor must hold an OD, PhD, or Masters followed by at least 2 years data management, project management and bioinformatic analyses experience.
  • Special Skills: Either clinical ophthalmology expertise or programming expertise (with extensive experience in machine learning and computer vision techniques) is required.

Assistant Professor

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree (PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science or related field such as Mathematics, Engineering or Physics. 
  • Research Assistant Professor must hold a PhD + at least 2 years of postdoctoral training working on AI/ML applications in biomedical imaging.
  • Special Skills: Either clinical ophthalmology expertise or programming expertise (with extensive experience in machine learning and computer vision techniques) is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous work experience in an academic or hospital-based healthcare environment is preferred.

Instructor

  • Expertise, interest or training in working data sciences for opthalmology
  • Strong publication record within ophthalmology, medical imaging, and/or computer science venues is preferred
  • Experience in teaching and mentorship of graduate students, undergraduate students, and high school students is desired

Assistant Professor

  • Expertise, interest or training in working data sciences for opthalmology
  • Strong publication record within ophthalmology, medical imaging, and/or computer science venues is preferred

Required Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and proficiency in medical and perioperative management of ophthalmic disease.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Clinical Ophthalmology Or Artificial Intelligence and its applications to medical imaging.
  • Demonstrated interest in mentoring.
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching basic clinical ophthalmology or AI skillsets to AI faculty/ clinical faculty/fellows/residents/medical students inside the department.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as

Instructor $90,000-98,000

Assistant Professor $98,000-120,000
