About the Department

The primary function of the Undergraduate Admissions is to identify, attract, and enroll first year and transfer students with outstanding academic ability and potential. With this role, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is the focus of the recruitment and enrollment efforts.

The efforts are commensurate with NC State University’s annual and long-term enrollment goals for the University, including diversity broadly defined with regard to geography, background, majors, and other key attributes.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of the Recruitment Coordinator position is to assist the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Undergraduate Admissions in identifying, recruiting, and enrolling well-qualified rural and/or first-generation first-year and transfer students each academic year.

This position will reside in the Enrollment Management and Services Division (EMAS) within Undergraduate Admissions and be a joint position with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The primary duties of the Recruitment Coordinator include:
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with prospective students, applicants, parents, and counselors in order to identify, recruit, and enroll a new class each year;
  • Articulating College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) admissions policies and procedures to students, parents, and advisers;
  • Reviewing academic credentials of applicants to make appropriate decisions regarding admissibility to the University;
  • Manage CALS Nominate a Student program;
  • Manage the correspondence with targeted prospective and admitted students as well as to key stakeholders including various high schools in rural areas of North Carolina;
  • Represent NC State University to prospective students, parents, and school counselors by participating in high school visits, college fairs, receptions, open house events, etc. There is extensive contact with the public by phone, email, and in-person through travel;
  • Recruit and counsel prospective students, providing information about the University, CALS nominate-a-student program, admission standards, policies, and procedures;
  • Conduct information sessions on and off campus for prospective students and their parents regarding NC State and CALS.

Other Responsibilities

  • Recruitment efforts involve extensive travel, primarily in North Carolina, and considerable public speaking;
  • Weekend work will be required occasionally;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • 2+ years of experience in higher education (with a preference for Recruitment, Admissions, Academic Advising, or Student Services)

Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to travel up to 25-30% of the time to high schools, community colleges, and other CALS Scholars Program recruitment and/or yield events;
  • Knowledge and ability to use effective approaches for selecting applicants who will be admissible;
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize relevant policies and legislation, and apply them to recruitment efforts;
  • Ability to exercise judgment and work independently;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively as a team member;
  • Strong organization and time management skills to ensure scheduled deadlines;
  • Knowledgeable in the use of computerized management information systems (databases);
  • Demonstrated ability to make accurate and consistent interpretations of a broad variety of academic and/or administrative policies and procedures;
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, particularly in matters relative to sensitive or confidential student records, personnel, or organizational matters;
  • Work requires in-depth analysis and counseling skills along with independent judgment and discretion to render appropriate admissions decisions in an increasingly competitive market;
  • Flexibility to travel for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a University work setting is a plus;
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in counseling, higher education, or student services;
  • Significant time spent living in or working with students from a rural community;
  • Experience in event planning is a plus;
  • Experience with a variety of technology.

A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of the start date. Driver’s license must be maintained as a condition of employment.
