The Division of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ames National Laboratory is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.

The successful candidate will work with Principal Investigators and Scientists researching the in situ growth of nanostructures under Ultra High Vacuum conditions and the tuning of their electronic and magnetic properties. The group uses two main techniques: scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy  (STM/STS) and high resolution Low Energy Electron Diffraction (Spot Profile Aanalysis-LEED). The techniques are complementary and provide local (in real space) and ensemble averaging information (in reciprocal space. ). The work will include developing, planning and performing experiments, critically analyzing results, performing optimization to improve outcomes, and generating reports, presentations and manuscripts for publication. The research will focus mainly on graphene on SiC, growth of metals on top of graphene and graphene intercalation by metals to modify graphene’s properties. Work will expand on the growth and characterization of nanographenes on insulating substrates to build atomically perfect quantum mechanical structures.

The position requires ability to work with a diverse team consisting of staff scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and students, and conduct both collaborative and independent research. Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet set milestones, and draft quarterly progress reports is essential. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with positive attitude are also helpful to provide a professional work environment.


Required Minimum Qualifications:

 Ph.D. must be completed prior to start date.


Preferred Qualifications:

 

Ph.D. degree in Surface Physics or Surface Chemistry.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with STM/STS, quantitative surface diffraction, or other surface.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with other surface characterization techniques (XPS, ARPES) and very familiar with UHV procedures.

5-6 years’ experience following PhD.

Demonstrated publication record.
