General Notes

The initial assignment is one year, with the possibility of extensions based on funding and job performance.

Security sensitive; criminal background check conducted on selected candidate. Hiring decision is contingent upon applicant successfully clearing background requirements.


Purpose

The position will involve full time laboratory work that includes microbiology and molecular biology, plus some work with insect cultures. The laboratory group includes undergraduate and graduate students as well as more senior postdoctoral researchers, and the successful candidate will work closely with several groups to assist in their projects. 


Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory work in microbiology, including culturing, preserving and basic characterization of bacterial strains.

  • Perform experiments examining the relationships of bacteria to insect hosts.

  • Maintain records of experiments and results.

  • Work on several projects together with others in the same laboratory.

  • Help to maintain laboratory supplies and laboratory organization.


Required Qualifications

BS in biological sciences, experience in molecular biology and microbiology methods in a research lab environment, good sterile technique skills, strong sense of curiosity and interest in microbiology, ability to communicate effectively with other lab researchers, experience in keeping a laboratory notebook.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience in basic characterization of microbial metabolism, bacterial culturing methods, DNA extraction, PCR, and related methods. Experience in microscopy. Experience working with Drosophila. Knowledge of current microbiology literature.


Salary Range

$38,000 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

  • 40 hours/week is required, and most of this time should be during normal business hours (e.g. 8:00am-5:00pm), although number of hours/day and days/week may change depending on what projects are being pursued.
