Metagenome Data Scientist

Job Description

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Joint Genome Institute (JGI ) has an opening for a Metagenome Data Scientist to join the JGI Metagenome Program.

In this exciting role, you will develop and apply computational tools for the analysis and interpretation of large-scale metagenomic data for JGI’s user community, particularly for prokaryotic and eukaryotic metagenome bins. You will focus on developing new visualization or analysis methods for large-scale ecological and evolutionary analyses from metagenome data, including evaluating strain heterogeneity, pangenomes and putative microbe-microbe interactions. You will be expected to support a broad portfolio of metagenome projects, including user science through the user programs, and contribute as a member of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists and software developers.

The JGI ’s mission is to provide the global research community with access to the most advanced integrative genome science capabilities in support of the DOEs research mission to solve the world’s evolving energy and environmental challenges. The JGI supports projects in genome sequencing, synthesis, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and natural products in plants, fungi, algae, and microorganisms. This position is headquartered on the Lab’s main site at the Integrative Genomics Building (IGB) (Virtual Tour ).

What You Will Do:

  • Design, benchmark, and apply bioinformatics tools to enable analysis and interpretation of large-scale metagenomic data for JGI’s user community, particularly for prokaryotic and eukaryotic metagenome bins.
  • Develop new visualization or analysis methods for time-series projects to support ecological and evolutionary data interpretation, including evaluating strain heterogeneity, pangenomes and putative microbe-microbe interactions.
  • Support ongoing user projects through requests for advanced analyses in line with the Metagenome Program’s strategic objectives and goals.
  • Work in a high-performance computing environment and collaborate with a team of computer scientists, software developers and postdoctoral researchers to develop new methods and tools for large-scale metagenome data analysis.
  • Present updates at group meetings and contribute to the preparation of scientific publications describing new computational approaches, methods, and subsequent analyses.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience processing large volumes of data, conducting genome and metagenome data analysis, and performing comparative metagenomics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated programming skills in Python, including familiarity with Perl, JAVA, and C/C++.
  • Experience with general database design, version control, and operating in a parallel computing environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of standard sequencing analysis methods including assembly, gene calling, and functional annotation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience organizing, preparing, and presenting research and/technical information to technical and non technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills including problem-solving, troubleshooting, decision-making, and critical thinking to make sound judgments and provide recommendations and creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the experience collaborating with a diverse team of technical and non technical staff members both internal and external to the organization.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree (MS/Ph.D.) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of existing Bioinformatics databases, tools and best practices.
  • Knowledge of tools used in Microbial Ecology studies.
  • Familiarity with advanced UNIX utilities and shell programming.
  • Experience with Statistical Analysis.

Notes:

  • For full consideration, please apply with a resume by May 23, 2023.
  • This is a full time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position has a targeted salary range of $103,896 to $142,860 per year for job code C78.2. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
