Job Description


The Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory seeks well-prepared candidates for a postdoctoral position in distributed learning and optimization.

In this role you can expect to:

  • Perform research in design and development of distributed algorithms and leveraging the developed methods for scientific applications that require data-driven distributed optimization, federated learning, and inference.
  • Work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of mathematicians, computer scientists, and DOE user facilities (e.g., Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source and Leadership Computing Facility).

Position Requirements

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Ph.D. (typically completed within the last 0-3 years) in computer science, applied mathematics, operations research, or a related discipline
  • Graduate/postgraduate research in machine learning, numerical optimization, data analysis, and programming experience in Pytorch, Tensorflow, and other relevant languages/packages
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values: impact, respect, integrity, teamwork, and safety

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Distributed algorithms, multimodal data analysis, privacy-preserving techniques, edge-computing
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research involving mathematicians, computer scientists, and other discipline scientists/engineers
  • Proposal development
