Position Summary

The position of Director of Academic Advising for First- and Second-Year Students is a new leadership position created as part of the phased implementation of the bi-campus Fordham College Advising Center serving students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Advising, who oversees the Center across both campuses, the Director of First- and Second-Year Advising (one Director per campus) will provide campus-based oversight in the development and ongoing work of the Advising Center, supervise 5-10 Academic Advisors and Senior Academic Advisors for First- and Second-Year Students at their respective campuses, and serve as the advisor for approximately 100 students.

The Director is responsible for providing campus-based leadership for the implementation of the new advising model and for supporting a collaborative, team-based, student-focused

approach to academic advising in Fordham’s liberal arts college.

Essential Functions

STRATEGIC

  • Works closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Advising to plan and implement the continued growth of the Advising Center.
  • Contributes leadership to developing and implementing assessment plans with an eye to continuous improvement to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Establishes and maintains a productive collaboration with the other Director of First- and Second-Year Students to develop a strong advising community and to create programs that support student success and retention in a consistent and aligned manner.
  • Works collaboratively with departmental chairs, associate chairs, program directors, faculty mentors, deans in FCRH, FCLC, Gabelli School of Business, and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies, and other members of the faculty and staff, to foster a strong advising community rooted in a team approach.
  • Partners with other university departments such as Academic Records, Student Accounts, IT, Dean of Students Office to promote student success and retention efforts.

MANAGEMENT

  • Oversees the day-to-day functions of the Advising Center for First- and Second-Year Students including supervising the Senior Academic and Academic Advisors.
  • In collaboration with the other Director, provides leadership and training to the First- and Second-Year Advisors on their respective campus and creates professional development opportunities for staff to share best practices in all areas of the student experience to continue to improve student success and retention.
  • Manages the use of the Student Hub (SalesForce) by the First- and Second-Year Advisors to keep record of meetings and notes and to identify students who might be at risk while exploring new ways to utilize the portal to engage with students and promotes student success and retention.
  • Develops systems for working to support students on Academic Probation in collaboration with the full Advising Center staff to promote academic progression, success, and retention.
  • Supports Advisors in understanding Core, Major, and Minor requirements and assists them with high-level challenges that arise.

ADVISING

  • Meets individually with all assigned students (in person, online, and by phone) on a regular basis to provide holistic academic advising and degree planning and to support the transition from high school to college in line with the Advisors.
  • Attends regular case conferences and works collaboratively with others across the institution, including Assistant Deans for Student Support and Success, Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Disability Services, Campus Ministry and Student Affairs, in identifying and supporting at-risk students.
  • Responds to regular inquiries from students, parents, faculty, and other administrators with regard to academic and course related issues. Understands and complies with all FERPA regulations and maintains appropriate confidentiality.
  • Supports major campus events such as Commencement and works with Admissions on events for incoming students, including student recruitment events and academic orientation.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Some evening and weekend hours are required, on occasion, to support major campus events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in higher education, student affairs, academic advising, or transfer student support with progressive responsibilities
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Familiarity with best practices in academic advising, student success, and retention, and in working with a varied, diverse population of students.
  • Proficiency in (or ability to quickly learn) common software tools such as Microsoft Office Suite and G-Suite. Experience with Banner, Salesforce, and web management systems a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple responsibilities, organize, prioritize, and work collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Understanding of and commitment to furthering the Catholic, Jesuit mission in liberal arts higher education.
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

Minimum Starting Salary: $90,000

Maximum Starting Salary: $110,000

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
