Position Summary

Responding to Fordham’s strategic plan Educating for Justice, Fordham College at Rose Hill and Fordham College at Lincoln Center have created a new position, Director of Transfer Students, to advance the University’s goal of transforming “policies and practices to increase transfer student enrollment and retention, especially to enable those studying at New York City institutions to enroll and succeed at Fordham.”

The Director of Transfer Students will provide leadership for academic aspects of the transfer student experience, including developing curricular pathways and articulation agreements, revising academic policies and practices to be transfer-friendly, and reducing institutional barriers to transfer student success. The Director will also serve as the first academic point of contact for admitted transfer students before they begin working with their Academic Advisors.

The Director of Transfer Students reports jointly to the Associate Dean of Advising and the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives.

Essential Functions

Academic Leadership and Advocacy

  • Leads ongoing review, analysis, and revision of academic policies and practices related to the transfer experience with an eye to establishing a more inclusive approach to assessing previous academic work and transferability of credits to meet core and major requirements and, more generally, collaborates with key offices across the university to promote transfer student success.
  • Provides academic leadership for the development of curricular pathways and articulation agreements with community colleges in collaboration with the Associate Director for Transfer and Articulation Services, academic program leadership, and others as appropriate.
  • Creates and implements a transition plan, based on current theories and best practices,
  • to support transfer students from the time they are accepted until they have registered for their first semester of courses.

Collaborations and Partnerships

  • Collaborates with other units at Fordham, notably the Associate Director for Transfer and Articulation Services and the Associate Director of Transfer Admissions, to improve the transfer student application and onboarding experience in keeping with best practices.
  • Provides leadership, in cooperation with colleagues in Admissions and other areas, to shape and support Admissions events and programs for incoming transfer students.
  • Works collaboratively with Gabelli School of Business, and with departmental chairs, associate chairs, program directors, faculty mentors, and deans in FCRH/FCLC and PCS to support internal transfers.
  • Collaborates regularly with members of the Core Curriculum Committee regarding improving transferability of external courses to the Core. Transfer Credit Evaluation and Management.
  • Reviews and evaluates course equivalencies for both transfer students and continuing students in collaboration with faculty leadership of departments and programs.
  • Reviews and evaluates transfer credits for first-time first year students (including APs, IBs, and college courses taken in high school) according to University and College guidelines in collaboration with faculty leadership of departments and programs.
  • Works with the Associate Director for Transfer and Articulation Services in cultivating, establishing, and managing articulation agreements with feeder schools.
  • Serves as liaison with the Study Abroad office, Academic Advisors, and academic programs regarding course equivalencies.

General Responsibilities

  • Responds to regular inquiries from students, parents, faculty, and other administrators with regard to transfer student and course questions. Understands and complies with all FERPA regulations and maintains appropriate confidentiality as needed.
  • Contributes to major campus events such as Commencement, Open House, Academic
  • Orientation, and awards ceremonies, as needed.
  • Represents the colleges at meetings of the Transfer Working Group and other relevant committees as appropriate.
  • Some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field), or equivalent experience required.
  • Five years experience in higher education, student affairs, academic advising, or transfer student support.
  • Familiarity with best practices in supporting transfer students, academic advising, student success, and working with a varied, diverse population of students.
  • Proficiency in various software tools such as Microsoft Office Suite and G-Suite. Experience with Banner, Salesforce, and web management systems a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively across a large, complex institution of higher education.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple responsibilities, organize, prioritize, and work collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Understanding of and commitment to furthering the Catholic, Jesuit mission in liberal arts higher education.
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

Minimum Starting Salary: $72,000

Maximum Starting Salary: $90,000

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
