The Chemical Sciences and Engineering (CSE) Division is seeking a successful candidate who will perform innovative research within the Electrochemical Energy Storage Group of CSE to understand the role of precursor types in solid state synthesis in support of our lithium-ion battery recycling program and the ReCell Center at Argonne. This will be achieved through the use and application of various probes (e.g., synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction, MAS-NMR Spectroscopy, electron microscopy). Work will include experimental synthetic design, data interpretation, presentation of results at National & International meetings, and publication in the peer-reviewed literature.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of a variety of solid-state synthetic methods, including air and water sensitive materials, fluxes, high temperature methods, and solution-based synthesis a plus

  • Characterization background should include a working knowledge of diffraction, common spectroscopic techniques, and a background in either chemistry, chemical engineering, geosciences, or materials science

  • Considerable skill in working interactively and productively in a multidisciplinary environment is needed

  • Good skill in oral and written communication and good record of publication and external recognition in relevant area

  • Good skill in the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment

  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in solid state or materials chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science at the Ph.D. degree level with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience

This position may require the ability to travel for work at out-of-state synchrotron facilities and to programmatic meetings when required.
