Job Summary:

We are looking for 1.0 full-time Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional who is bright, enthusiastic, organized, kind, and detail-oriented individuals, to work in Dr. Burger’s and Dr. Mosimann’s lab.

Dr. Burger’s lab uses zebrafish and cutting-edge imaging techniques to study the development of the notochord and spine. The Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional will manage general lab organization duties including lab ordering and maintenance of the Burger lab zebrafish. The Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional will also learn and employ techniques in molecular and cell biology.

Dr. Mosimann’s lab uses zebrafish to study lateral plate mesoderm with cutting-edge imaging techniques. The Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional will manage general lab organization duties including lab ordering and Mosimann zebrafish maintenance. The Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional will also learn and employ molecular and cell biology techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects.
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research.
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results.
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced.
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.
  • Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary.
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as needed.
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions.
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information.
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues.
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the laboratory and equipment in working and clean condition.
  • Order reagents and materials.
  • Zebrafish husbandry and maintenance.
  • Genotype zebrafish embryos, larvae, and adults.
  • Generating mutant and transgenic zebrafish.
  • Molecular biology, e.g., PCR, cloning, restriction digests and gel electrophoresis.
  • Perform in situ RNA hybridization and immunohistochemistry.
  • Perform microscopic analyses, imaging.
  • Assist RNA sequencing studies.
  • Additional responsibilities related to position as assigned by PI.

Our investigations focus on several major tissue and organ systems such as the brain, heart, intestine, face and vascular, olfactory and immune systems. Our work is leading to a better understanding of childhood disabilities associated with neuropsychiatric disease, Down syndrome, the congenital basis of cardiovascular and facial malformations and the impact of maternal health on fetal development.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field.
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.
  • Previous lab experience with animal husbandry.
  • Prior experience with methods including, but not limited to PCR, cloning, immunoprecipitation, microscopy, RNA in situ hybridization, etc.
  • Prior experience with bioinformatics analyses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.

    Anticipated Pay Range:

    The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $40,280 to $51,236.

    The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable

    estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
