About Berkeley Lab and the MBIB Division:

Berkeley Lab is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory managed by the University of California and designated a Federally Funded Research and Development Center. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, we have a close relationship with UC Berkeley, as well as robust partnerships with other academic institutions and industries, including those in Silicon Valley. The Laboratory conducts world-class research that supports clean energy, a healthy planet, and solution-inspired discovery science. Berkeley Lab is defined by our deeply felt sense of stewardship, which we describe as a commitment to taking care of the Laboratory's research, people, and resources that are entrusted to us. Our values of team science, innovation, service, trust, and respect knit us together as a community. We practice these values and prioritize our principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability (IDEA) to build highly effective teams that produce world-class science and technology and where all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, disciplines, and experiences, can thrive.

Berkeley Lab’s Biosciences Area is a leader in the advancement of biological science relevant to national-scale challenges in energy, environment, health, biomanufacturing, and technology development. The MBIB Division’s mission is to generate a mechanistic and predictive understanding of biological processes by developing and applying molecular- and meso-scale visualization and advanced spectroscopies, enabling the control, manipulation, and generation of biological function. The Division’s world-class research programs in Bioenergetics, Cellular and Tissue Imaging, and Structural Biology are primarily funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and DOE Office of Science, including Biological and Environmental Research, Basic Energy Sciences, and Advanced Scientific Computing Research programs. Additional funding comes from industry partnerships and Laboratory Directed Research and Development. MBIB research areas include mechanistic studies of biological systems, such as photosynthetic and bio-inspired synthetic systems, molecular structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules, neurobiology, cancer biology, plant biology, microbiology, and cell biology. To explore scientific questions in these areas, MBIB researchers apply a spectrum of cutting-edge approaches, including state-of-the-art imaging methods, X-ray techniques, spectroscopy, and cryo-EM.
