Status: 1.00 Full Time Non-Exempt

Reports to: Homeless Prevention Attorney

Legal Aid of Sonoma County (LASC) seeks a bilingual housing case worker to support our Homelessness Prevention Project and our Homeless Prevention Attorney. The project provides community education and legal assistance to individuals who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, seeking to remove legal barriers to becoming stably re-housed. The case worker will aid in the administration of the program, including but not limited to conducting community outreach and education, facilitating client intake, data collection and grant reporting. The case worker will also work closely with the Homeless Prevention Attorney to support the Program’s legal work, which includes counsel and advice, legal forms preparation and legal representation.

Additionally, the Program works closely with LASC’s broader housing team to coordinate services as well as with several non-profit homeless services partners, including shelter providers and social workers.

LASC has a high-volume caseload with firm deadlines; this position requires excellent organizational and time management skills; this position also requires the ability to drive and regularly staff clinics and outreach events off site.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Legal Support for Clients:

  • Assist potential new clients and workshop participants with program eligibility screening, conflict checks, and the accurate completion of intake and assessment forms.
  • Triage and interview clients.
  • Follow legal case protocols and maintain organized case files.
  • Conduct client correspondence.
  • Prepare and file basic judicial council legal forms under attorney supervision.
  • Support attorney’s legal work as needed, including providing translation as needed.
  • Maintains client and attorney meeting calendars, and tracks case deadlines.

General:

  • Screen new clients for eligibility, set up case files, complete intake paperwork, and enter new client cases into the client database. Maintain up-to-date case notes, time reporting and client demographic data. Close completed cases in the database and enter appropriate outcomes.
  • Coordinate and help facilitate client workshops and outreach events.
  • Collect and maintain statistical records on services provided, as required by funders.
  • Provide administrative support to the attorney.
  • Regularly travel to court, outreach events, and to client appointments (required).
  • Other tasks as assigned, including providing administrative to support to other programs as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in an office environment, preferably a nonprofit or law office.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all persons regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, economic background, immigration status, gender identification, or sexual orientation. Compassion for and desire to help the vulnerable and underserved in our community.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a diverse team.
  • Must be flexible, work well under pressure, and manage time effectively.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office, google docs, and database programs.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively with great attention to detail, including timely case management and capturing of data for reports to funders.
  • A firm commitment to on time and accurate timesheet reporting is required.
  • Previous experience in legal services and/or demonstrated commitment to public interest law work or to legal services for the poor, is strongly preferred.
  • A valid CA Driver’s license and current proof of automobile insurance required.

Experience Desired, but not required:

  • Experience working with tenants or homeless individuals.
  • Prior legal experience.
  • Experience providing direct services to clients.

SALARY: $23.00 - $24.50 per hour plus a generous benefits package
