Sustainability Data Engineer

Job Description

SUSTAINABILITY DATA ENGINEER, Office of Sustainability (MITOS), to lead projects that produce actionable data insights and develop tools to help MIT advance campus-wide climate and sustainability commitments.  Will be responsible for updating, building, and maintaining data architecture for tracking and reporting on all campus sustainability activities; formalizing the data acquisition, analytical structure, and procedures to curate and organize data from multiple sources for inclusion in the MIT Sustainability DataPool, a centralized repository available to the the MIT community; enabling data pipeline automation in MITOS’ cloud infrastructure where feasible; optimize, monitor, and scale applications and associated infrastructure; and identify and build new tools and apps to inform future business intelligence.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering/ /business/math/policy or related technical field; seven years’ related work experience and at least five working with an open-source data science programming language (i.e., R, Python); knowledge of traditional relational databases (SQL) and big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark); computer programming experience (Python, R); experience with APIs; strong data visualization skills and three years’ experience with related software (Tableau); experience collaborating with others to obtain, ingest, organize, and clean data sets to enable analysis; ability to collaborate as part of a team; support for MITOS’s commitment to promoting justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; demonstrated cultural competency and inclusivity and ability to work with colleagues/stakeholders across diverse cultures/backgrounds and serve the needs of diverse populations; and experience with cloud technologies, preferably AWS.  PREFERRED: master’s degree, big data experience (Spark, Hive, Hadoop), experience applying machine learning approaches, experience working with energy or other sustainability metrics, and higher education work experience.  Job #22614-10
