Structured Liquids Postdoc

Job Description

The Materials Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL ) is seeking a highly motivated Structured Liquids Postdoc to join our team. Our cross-disciplinary program focuses on utilizing adaptive interfacial assemblies to structure liquids into new materials and energy devices.

As a postdoctoral scholar, you will be responsible for leading the synthetic development of functional materials and systems from multi-phasic liquids using interfacial assemblies in 3D printed and patterned all-liquid architectures. Your ultimate goal will be to controllably direct chemical or energy flows in such all-liquid materials and devices to produce useful work. Examples include structured liquid chemical reactors, batteries, electronics, and time-programmable materials exploiting the unique characteristics of chemically fueled interfacial assemblies.

Join our team and make a difference in the future of materials science!

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise in organic, polymer, and nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, and assembly at liquid–liquid interfaces.
  • Develop new concepts for directing pattern generation in interfacial assemblies of polymers or nanoparticles.
  • Develop new concepts for controlling chemical and energetic transformations in all-liquid materials and devices, e.g., through chemical coupling, spatial confinement, functional interfaces, transport-selective interfaces, etc.
  • Collaborate with MSD PIs and program Postdocs to understand in depth the fundamental principles underpinning the reconfigurability of structured liquids, in and out of equilibrium.
  • Mentor junior researchers associated with the program, while collectively meeting program milestones on schedule.
  • Play a key role in maintaining a robust and inclusive safety culture.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals; contribute to scientific research papers, reports, review articles; present oral reports.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials science and engineering, or chemical engineering.
  • Experience in synthetic organic chemistry or systems chemistry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or expertise in characterization methods of organic and polymeric materials and their assemblies.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and perform collaborative research and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately and eloquently represent and promote scientific projects to audiences of diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters.
  • Ability to guide and train junior researchers.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000.00 - $5,996.00. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
