Research Scientist, Biomechatronics

Job Description

RESEARCH SCIENTIST, BIOMECHATRONICS, Media Lab, to join the Biomechatronics research group in its efforts to enhance the human body beyond what is normally possible.  Will work independently and lead a project in human-technology hybrids, investigating novel human-machine designs, interactions, and collaborations through the study and emulation of biological inspired methods, mechanisms and processes; and foster scientific explorations in areas like animal-human morphologies, motion, appearance, physical modelling, simulation, and rendering.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in art, architecture, design, or a related field; a background in biologically-inspired interfaces (e.g., external prosthetics, wearables, appendages); computational design experience, including experience with computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing; experience with physical modeling that includes 3D hand-modeling, prosthetic-orthotic fabrications, and similar artisanal manufacturing processes; at least five years of experience in applied research in body-augmentation design; excellent academic writing, communication, and interpersonal skills; and experience with interdisciplinary collaborations. PREFERRED: experience with team-building and guiding, monitoring, and project execution; experience with the development of device manufacturing processes and building prototypes; knowledge of diverse orthopedic materials, polymers, and fabrication processes and strong craft skills; and track record of exhibitions, installations, performances, and other public work presentations.  Job #22596
