This position is ideal for individuals looking to gain hands on experience in the study of molecular biology or cancer biology. The lab environment provides exposure to a wide range of topics and scientific techniques; projects in the lab incorporate biochemical analyses, molecular approaches, cell culture, and computational studies to interrogate scientific questions about epigenetic control of gene amplifications and extrachromosomal DNA in normal stress responses and the dysregulation in cancer. We work closely with other groups on campus, meeting monthly with collaborators in the pharmacology department and monthly in a joint lab meeting that includes 7 other cancer-focused labs. The campus also provides opportunities to learn about research from other institutions through regular seminars and invited speakers.

Key Responsibilities

Entry Level:

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects.
    • Perform cell culture and manipulate cells with pharmacologic and genetic approaches to analyze gene copy number by DNA FISH.
    • Potential to perform a wide range of fluorescent microscopy-based assays such as immunofluorescence, metaphase spreads, phenotypic and morphological assays, cell growth and toxicity assays.
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research.
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.
    • Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments.
  • Manage and maintain laboratory reagents and inventory.
    • Handle delivering, receiving, and retrieving frozen samples from freezers and physical inventory of frozen samples in liquid nitrogen and -80 freezers.
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions.
  • Review and implement lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required.

Intermediate Level, all the above and:

  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions.
  • Independently Review, develop, and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects.
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist and train junior team members.

Senior Level, all the above and:

  • Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or supplies.
  • Provide laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of investigators and researchers.

Principal Level, all the above and:

  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert and authority in the area(s) of chromosome biology and commonly used laboratory techniques.
  • Assist PI with design, writing, and preparation of funding applications.

Additional Responsibilities, all levels:

  • Presenting data or updating projects at weekly lab meetings.
  • Support and assist team members and researchers from collaborative groups on research projects, experimental designs, and laboratory-based methodologies.
  • Assist in all other projects as needed.

Why Join Us:

The Black lab at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus studies how epigenetics regulates gene copy number and genomic instability. We are interested in how environmental stress causes epigenetic changes that target DNA rereplication of genes important for stress response. We are investigating how these mechanisms contribute to gene amplifications in cancer and how these processes can be leveraged for more effective cancer treatment.

We are looking for candidates with interests in understanding how epigenetics regulates the DNA rereplication response to metal stress, innate immune stress, and epithelial to mesynchymal transition. Candidates interested in how DNA rereplication contributes to generation of extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA) are also encouraged to apply.

We are a close-knit group of students, postdoctoral fellows and research specialists who collaborate with one another to help drive independent research projects. We meet frequently to give feedback on each other’s studies, discuss relevant publications and celebrate lab successes often with good food. The Anschutz Campus is situated just 25 minutes from the city of Denver and are fortunate to be close to hiking and skiing in the beautiful Rocky Mountains! Please join us!

The University of Colorado offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, tuition benefits, ECO pass, paid time off – vacation, sick, and holidays and more.
