GW’s Department of Medicine, Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension has been at the forefront of innovative research and translating the research to patient care for the past 40 years. We participated in Modification of Diet in Renal Disease study and other innovative studies that revolutionized dialysis therapy. Following on this tradition, we are one of the four institutions in the United States that have been selected to explore novel and innovative therapies in patients with kidney disease. As a tertiary care center, we provide a wide array of services and offer second opinions regarding a variety of diseases to those who seek it.
The division is searching for a full-time Senior Research Assistant in Dr. Jose’s laboratory. The lab focuses on the role of dopamine and adrenergic receptor subtypes and dopamine regulatory genes (e.g., G protein-coupled receptor kinase 4 [GRK4], sorting nexins, gastrin) on sodium transport in specific nephron segments and their roles in the pathogenesis of genetic hypertension and metabolic syndrome in humans and animal models of these diseases.
The Senior Research Assistant will assist principal investigators and post-doctoral scientists with the experiments related to salt sensitive hypertension and renal function. Much of the position’s focus is on assisting the principal investigator in the performance of chemical, pharmacological and molecular biological assays in cell culture and in animal tissues.
The Senior Research Assistant receives direct supervision and mentoring from the principal investigator and other lab staff in order to develop skills in bench lab techniques and advance their career in academic research.
Duties include:
• Provide technical lab support by assisting principal investigators and post-doctoral scientists in the perform of a broad range of routine laboratory research tasks, including western blotting, real time PCR and immunohistochemistry.
• Assist the principal investigators and post-doctoral scientists with the detailed observations, record and maintain laboratory records.
• Assist the principal investigators and post-doctoral scientists with lab research methods and equipment, prepare and stock solutions and other media. Maintain research lab supply inventory.
• Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in lab animal procedures and surgery.
- Certification from AALAS such as LAT, LATG, or CMAR.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
