The CDC Foundation is seeking a communications officer who is passionate about communicating the importance of health partnerships that improve and save lives. This individual will play an integral role in helping the CDC Foundation promote its brand, feature critical programs and highlight partnerships between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the philanthropic and private sectors to a variety of key audiences. The staff in this role will serve as the communication department’s liaison for the non-infectious disease programs.
The successful candidate will possess strong strategic communications skills, including outstanding storytelling capabilities in writing for a variety of platforms such as the web, social media and video.

Qualifications

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience creating content for a variety of media platforms.
    • Experience developing and implementing communication campaigns to fulfill organizational strategic goals.
    • High level of diplomacy and ability to interact with staff at all levels and work collaboratively with people of diverse skills, cultures and backgrounds.
    • Experience with website content management systems.
    • Basic graphic design skills with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign are preferred.
    • Initiative to coordinate with internal and external partners and proactively communicate about a program or event.
    • Experience working with non-infectious disease campaigns or programs is preferred.
    • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
    • High level of individual initiative and creativity, including developing communications materials such as video, graphics and other materials for outreach.
    • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
    • 3-5 years’ experience in communications, ideally in a nonprofit or health environment.
    • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism or related field.

Responsibilities

    • Develops and implements a variety of strategic communication plans. Manages communications projects from start to finish—interacting with points of contact inside and outside the organization, including donors, partners, staff and CDC.
    • Provides writing for a variety of communications, including blogs, stories and email outreach to highlight CDC Foundation programs and partners.
    • Serves as the communications point-of-contact for a portfolio of large-scale programs, events and campaigns and serves as the liaison for the non-infectious disease programs, helping to develop as well as coordinate external communications on behalf of the department.
    • Implements activities across multiple media platforms including the CDC Foundation website and blog, social media networks, email communications and publications. Enlists and coordinates the support of additional communications staff or contractors to meet needs as required.
    • Builds and maintains strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the CDC Foundation program, advancement and internal operations departments, CDC communications staff and partners to build brand awareness and ensure coordination of efforts and maximum impact.
    • Serves as project manager on a wide variety of communications initiatives as point of contact for all non-infectious disease programs.
    • Develops messaging for the Foundation’s suite of social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Familiarity with Sprout Social or similar platform a plus.
    • Develops a wide variety of communication materials such as video, fact sheets, graphics.
    • Assists with messaging and research for speeches and presentations, including the development of PowerPoint presentations.
    • Supports the team’s media outreach efforts to journalists and social media influencers.
    • Assists with administrative duties for the department, including expense reports and invoicing.

$65,000 - $72,000 a year
