All About You


The Student Involvement Center at Saint Louis University is excited to open a search for the Assistant Director of Graduate Student Initiatives. This position is newly created as a result of the University’s growing graduate student enrollment, and with intentional collaboration across multiple divisions including Enrollment & Retention Management, and Academic Affairs. The selected candidate will play an instrumental role in developing a strategic plan for engagement, acculturation and holistic support for graduate students among all of the University’s colleges, schools and programs. A successful candidate would do this with core Jesuit philosophies of “Cura Personalis” and “service, for and with others” at the forefront of their daily interactions with all members of the University community.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Director of Student Involvement, the Assistant Director (AD) of Graduate Student Initiatives will serve as the division’s leader in developing a vibrant, transformative and engaging university experience for students pursuing post-graduate education. They will be a close campus partner for the Office of International Services, Enrollment, Career Services, Student Financial Services, and the Office of Graduate Education. Special focus will be given to supporting graduate students in their search for campus community and belonging, while also focusing on integrating them into the greater landscape of the overall SLU experience.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

International Graduate Student Initiatives :

In collaboration with campus partners, the AD will:

  • Serve on University wide planning and strategy committees, as an advocate and support for international graduate students matriculating at the University;

  • Develop, implement, and assess effectiveness of programs and workshops designed to meet unique personal and professional needs of international graduate students;

  • Identify international student needs across multiple identity groups, obtain and track relevant data, benchmark program initiatives and outcomes, in an effort to inform University practices and policies;

  • Coordinate intentional transition programming to support international graduate student acclimation into the greater university community;

  • Engage in inter/national networks, consortia, knowledge communities and/or other professional organizations to stay informed and educated about best practices supporting international graduate students and their experience in American higher education;

  • Participate in institutional and graduate education communities across the University.

Build infrastructure and capacity for expanding and sustaining programs and resources, including seeking, identifying, and securing external grants, contracts, and partnerships to support long term sustainability and growth of graduate student initiatives.

Advising Graduate Student Association (GSA), and individual graduate students :

  • Conduct one-on-one advising with graduate students and recent graduate alumni, both international and domestic, across all University disciplines.

  • In partnership with the Office of Graduate Education, serve as a co-advisor to the GSA, supporting the association's executive board leadership, while advocating for the needs of graduate students coordinating programming to unify the graduate student experience at the University.

  • Support the financial operations of GSA, including but not limited to budget oversight, management, and forecasting, and the allocation of professional development scholarships.

Student Involvement Administration and other duties :

  • Serve as an active and engaged member of the Student Involvement team, providing departmental leadership and support alongside the Director and Assistant Director of Student Involvement.

  • Represent the department on university working groups and/or committees, and supports department programming initiatives which serve all students (i.e. Fall Welcome, Homecoming/Family Weekend, Wellness Days, Leadership & Service Awards, etc.).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with national trends in graduate education and postdoctoral training, especially as relates to professional development and career preparation, and specifically about the life cycle of post-graduate academic training and preparation.

  • Broad knowledge and expertise in areas related to international students within American institutions of higher education.

  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the academic, career, professional and personal development needs of the international graduate student communities, and help with adapting and transitioning successfully to life in the United States and at the University.

  • Proven ability to develop and sustain successful collaborative relationships with a variety of institutional and external entities, especially maneuvering effectively through organizational dynamics and influencing decision-making and action.

  • Clearly articulated vision of broad possibilities and agility in adapting programs, resources, and services in ways that are responsive to evolving landscape and international student needs

  • Experience in student fee management and allocations

  • Experience in advising student organizations

  • Excellent communication skills, including both verbal and written communication as well as listening

  • Experience in planning large scale, campus-wide events with a variety of campus partners and stakeholders

  • Ability to work with and among a diverse population and develop rapport with all members of the campus community

  • Ability to maintain confidential and private information in a professional manner

  • Experience supervising professional staff

  • Ability to operate a personal computer and various software packages

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Great attention to detail

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required, supplemented with a minimum of two years of full-time, professional work experience. Preferred qualifications include masters or doctoral degree (in a related field), work experience in a college/university setting, and experience working with international students enrolled in American universities.
