Job Description


The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division seeks a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct fundamental research on the synthesis, characterization and electrochemistry of new electrode materials for energy storage. Investigates the properties of new nanoscale electrode assemblies and develops new synthesis methods through the use of materials science and chemistry. Plans and conducts research on the synthesis and characterization of materials, including processing techniques, electrochemical characterization, and structural characterization, while adhering to Laboratory and Divisional ESH/QA practices and policies. Prepares manuscripts of scientific papers for publication; contributes to progress reports and research proposals; and makes oral presentations at program reviews and technical society meetings, facilities, and capabilities.

  • Develops and maintains laboratory equipment and facilities

  • Develops new ideas, concepts and/or research proposals to create programmatic growth for the Division

  • Supervises technical personnel assigned to his research projects, ensuring that ESH/QA policies are followed

Keeps contact with academia and research communities outside of ANL.

Serves as a resource person for Group members and other ANL staff personnel in solving problems and seeks technical advice from ANL staff for his own research effort.


Position Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of and experimental expertise in electrochemistry, nanomaterials, surface chemistry, spectroscopy and instrumental methods. Considerable expertise in the characterization of materials. Considerable interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Good knowledge of materials chemistry and physical processing methods. Skill in data processing, evaluation, and interpretation

  • Some experience in battery related materials research is a plus

  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemistry, materials, or related disciplines at the Ph.D. degree level with zero to five years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience
