Treehouse seeks an accomplished, transformational, and highly collaborative development leader to join the organization as its new Chief Development Officer (CDO). The CDO is a member of the executive team and plays an integral role in setting agency direction, culture, and policy, and will be responsible for directing a growing program that generates critical funding to meet the most important needs of foster youth across the State of Washington. Partnering closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and executive team, the CDO will propel Treehouse to new levels of fundraising success, chart a bold course to the organization’s first comprehensive campaign, and align the efforts of the development and marketing team with strategic organizational priorities. 

This highly visible role offers a special opportunity to be of service to the Treehouse community and to draw inspiration from the many lives transformed through the mission. The incoming CDO will join Treehouse at a pivotal moment given the recent appointment of Dawn Rains as CEO, the realization of Treehouse’s strategic plans for statewide expansion, and the celebration of its 35th anniversary. This is an opportunity to lead a creative, dedicated, and fun development team at one of the most dynamic and growth-focused times in Treehouse’s history.

Reporting to the CEO, the CDO and provides strategic leadership and direction for the organization’s resource development, strategic communications and marketing including organizational brand, and volunteer engagement strategies. They will inspire a team of 20+ mission-driven advancement and development professionals with an approach that is empowering, highly communicative, encourages teamwork, provides mentorship, and creates a high-performing culture while maintaining an environment that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

The CDO will work to uplift the philanthropic capacity of all constituencies, identifying areas for growth, and developing strategies to meaningfully engage staff, board, volunteers, youth and young adults, and donors at all levels. In addition to developing a personal portfolio of donors, the CDO will partner with the CEO – the organization’s chief fundraiser – to engage, cultivate, and solicit top donors and prospects that include some of the most influential philanthropists and funders in the community. An engaged and giving Board of Directors and committed volunteer base are also ready to be mobilized on behalf of the mission.

As the CDO sets the growth strategy, they will bring the organization along through effective and transparent communication that creates alignment, understanding, and buy-in while putting in place indicators that measure progress against goals. 

The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for social justice and equity for young people; demonstrated strategic and operational excellence in advancement and development; personal track record of successfully raising major and principal gifts (six-seven figures) through individuals, corporations, and foundations; excellent people management skills and the commitment to develop leadership skills and capabilities across teams; a personal style that offers transparent communication, problem-solving, decision-making skills; and a history of collaborating with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders to develop impactful partnerships and achieve ambitious outcomes.

SELECT QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS:

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in advancement as both a senior level manager with a record of accomplishment leading a team, and as a frontline gift officer soliciting and closing gifts of $100K+.
  • Demonstrated experience with diverse funding streams including individuals, corporations, foundations, and special events; strong grasp of best practices and a holistic understanding of incorporating effective equity and inclusion strategies.
  • Changemaker with proven experience developing and operationalizing fundraising strategies to take an organization to a new stage of growth and impact.
  • Strategic thinking abilities with experience setting an advancement strategy to include marketing and brand guidelines and a cohesive communication plan to reach a variety of audiences.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage the day-to-day functioning of a department and effectively supervise staff and create and manage complex budgets, forecasts, and reporting.
  • Skilled narrator with extraordinary communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to connect and inspire internal and external audiences.
  • Authentic relationship builder who demonstrates intercultural competence with Board members, donors, and other volunteers in a nonprofit organization, including effectiveness in directing board fundraising activities.
  • Deep commitment to anti-racism and social justice through approach, action, and individual reflection, and demonstrated ability to engage in candid conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

ABOUT TREEHOUSE

Each day, nearly 10,000 children are in the foster care system in Washington state. They have tremendous potential, hopes and dreams for the future. But they have a unique set of challenges, including trauma, loss and changes in homes and schools. Emotional upheaval cause youth in foster care to face social, emotional and academic challenges on top of the challenges of growing up. Treehouse is the only nonprofit in Washington State focused on the specific educational needs of youth in foster care. Our youth-led programming model is uniquely adapted to the needs of our youth.

Treehouse directly supports and works alongside more than 6,000 youth in foster care in Washington state while advocating for broad systems-level change informed by their on-the-ground expertise and youth themselves. Through its programs and policy work, Treehouse is uniquely positioned to close the opportunity gap and positively change the outcomes of youth experiencing foster care through programs and policy change.
