Applied Geophysics Postdoc

Job Description

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar, Geophysics: Exploration Seismology. You will focus on creative processing approaches to infer subsurface properties relevant to energy and environmental applications. Your work will include planning, execution, and analysis of state-of-the-art acquisition systems and new processing approaches focused on time-lapse monitoring. This position will provide an opportunity to work with unique fiber-optic sensing techniques observing a variety of targets including CO2 injection, geothermal production, and oil & gas fracturing operations. We seek expertise in seismic signal processing and advanced imaging algorithms including timelapse full-waveform inversion and traveltime inversion in anisotropic environments.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct original and independent research under broad supervision and guidance.

  • Develop processing and data analysis approaches for large datasets acquired using fiber-optic techniques, including distributed acoustic sensing (DAS).

  • Develop codes for real-time processing and analysis of large datasets.

  • Assist planning and execution of large-scale seismic acquisition campaigns.

  • Integrate acquired seismic data with secondary geophysical and hydrogeological datasets for interpretation.

  • Work as a member of a large multidisciplinary research team.

  • Present and publish results.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Acquire and process near-surface active source seismic datasets as well as ambient seismic noise analysis for environmental characterization studies.

  • Develop codes for microseismic detection with DAS.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D in geophysics, computer science, civil engineering, or a related geoscience field

  • Strong programming background (e.g. MatLab, Python).

  • Experience with end-to-end seismic processing for reflection, VSP, and/or crosswell studies.

  • Experience in field seismic acquisition.

  • One or more of the following:

    • Experience with computational seismology utilizing large (> 1 TB) observational datasets.

    • Experience with distributed acoustic sensing and fiber optic measurement methods.

    • Experience with seismic signal processing approaches.

    • Experience with full waveform inversion approaches.

    • Experience with microseismic processing approaches.

    • Experience developing parallel implementations of seismic analysis algorithms.

    • Knowledge of quantitative rock physics.

  • Ability to effectively present and publish in a scientific venue, including sufficient language skills.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment and effectively collaborate with colleagues.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to develop proposals.

  • Familiarity with well logs and geological characterization approaches.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000.00 - $7,010.00 and is expected to start at $6,476.00 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
